Red face Tint Opinions Please

So here's the situation:

I recently bought my 2008 G. As I was at the negotiating table I said I wanted tint, and I asked how much? Sales guy says, $295, or something ridiculous like that. So I say, no thanks I can get it elsewhere for about $155. He said, hold up, let me see what I can do, comes back and knocks price to $175. So I say fine, do it, I am already here, it's convenient and they would be liable if anything happens. So far, so good. I take possession of the car and find that the 35% tint all the way around that the dealer installed is just not enough for the back glass, which is virtually flat and lets enormous amounts of sun in. So in the interest of aesthetics and sun protection for the materials on the back dash, I inquire with my local tint shop about getting darker tint, overlayed if possible. He inspects the current tint (from dealer) and finds imperfections and bubbles, the glass was not cleaned and prepped well at the dealer. The tint shop tells me that if they tint on top of that it would magnify the blemishes, which I understand and agree. So they suggest I take it back to the dealer and have them remove it, and since they can't do anything but 35%, I will go to the tint shop and have them install 15% or whatever the darkest is they have, and have them match the color to the side windows, all for about $50, which seems reasonable.

Now to my question, does the dealership owe me any refund for a botched tint job that I am having to pay an additional amount to correct? Am I getting shafted here, or is this my own fault? Input appreciated, as I am picking up my tintless G in a couple hours.

The dealer isn't going to give you anything and owes you nothing. You took possession of the car, if you had a problem with it in the first place you should have said something. Pony up the cash and have the tint shop strip it and re-tint if that's what you desire.

With any tint shop... if your not happy with the tint.. they will take it off and redo it...

I disagree with Maxipad- With tint... bubbles could be soap soulition used to install it... and they take a couple days to dry up... so If there are bubbles and dust still in there after its dried... you have every right to go back and tell them to redo it...
now... if you want another place to do it... tell the dealer that you dont like the imperfections and for them to remove there crappy job and leave it... that will save you money from the other shop having to remove it

THE DEALER OWES YOU A GOOD TINT JOB...Period

The dealer may redo it as a "good faith" type of deal as you had bought the car recently and they want you to be happy even if a little of it is at the dealers expense. I had an interior defect on the door and it is underminable if it was there before or after i took ownership, but they fixed if for me free of charge. Word to the wise though, if an associate doesn't help you out speak to the manager. They seem to be more willing to help.

Also, when I got my Mustang GT tinted(12%) It cost about $175 and the shop that did it contracts out to a guy that works for the area doing just tint jobs. It was definitely a quality job and you gotta think that if the shop would contract out the work then they would want customers to be happy, hence not having some schmoe do it for them.

Thanks for all the replies! I have the car back now, will be getting it tinted again tomorrow morning. The dealership didn't give me a rebate or anything, however, they did a fine job of detailing the interior and exterior before giving it back to me, I guess that's their form of an apology.

I was in your same position. The dealer installed 35% all around....I never asked for tint though.

I felt it wasn't enough so I went to the dealer, complained about the tint. They took it somewhere, got the tint removed, gave me a check for the $300. I took the car elsewhere and got a very nice tint job for under $300.

I have 20% on the sides and double limo on the rest with a strip on the windshield.

Complained about the $99 tint job (that was poorly done anyway) on a car with some nice electronics. Hinted it could cause interference.....blah blah blah.

They apologized, took the tint off, and gave me a check for the $299 that they charged me in the sticker.

Do I have a case if I say that I feel the tint was not dark enough to provide proper UV protection for the materials in the back seat, including leather and the tinting was not applied correctly?

I doubt it. I guess they only do 35% because that is what is legal in your state. And there shouldn't be any UV damage after a couple days on the interior...

yea i would do 15 all around.... maybe limo on the back... also tint does take a few days to cure and any tint shop should tell you this... mine looked a little off for 2 days or so and now its perfect... same deal with my buddies i referred over to the tint shop... talk to them and they should give you the money back.. usually tint shops will do so

Tell them its interfering with your AM radio since they used a crappy metallic tint. And sometimes your NAV works finky (<==is that a word?).

Whats the purpose of buying a car with a lot of technology if you can't enjoy it since they put crappy tint on.....
