Rock chips in windshield
Rock chips in windshield
Have any of you noticed any rock chips in your windshield yet? I don't drive on rocky/gravelly roads (nor behind big trucks), but I've already got a few. I was wondering if Nissan was using softer glass or something.
Even when they're really small, can you have them filled in? I have two sets of 3 or 4 little pock marks each. Really annoying, especially since they're in my line of sight when I'm driving.
Rock chips can be tuff to totally remove. There is some products or compounds you can buy to use with a buffer to fill in or remove sand blast spickels. Check the detailing forum here. There a link for cleaning products that help with this.
Nissan is know for the last few years to use cheap glass. I was replacing the windshield on my Z yearly. Good thing there not that high in cost.

Can any give a link or name to a good solution to clearing up these rock pits? Mine are very small but can be seen when light hits the window. If there is a way to fix this I would like to know since these are not cracks or anything like that but little or very little pits in the glass.
I think this is a design choice.
Soft glass will chip somewhat easily but be less prone to cracking. Harder glass will resist chipping but one day it'll be hit by a bigger rock and it'll crack halfway across the windshield.
I think Nissan just chooses the former, whereas other manufacturers (how many Chevy Trucks have you seen w/ a rock across the windshield) choose the latter.

Seriously though...I just got my second very noticeable chip and I'm under 900 miles still. At this rate I'll be checking my insurance coverage for windshields very soon. Never had to replace a windshield before.
