Can aluminum on top of shifter be polished or replaced

The aluminum or plastic piece on top of my auto shifter is scratched. Can it be replaced or polished?

do you have any pictures though?.. how deep are the scratches?

is there any discoloration in the scratches? if it's plastic and you have to sand, you may sand through whatever coating is on the top, if there is one.

mine isn't scratched, so i can't tell

Was this for an automatic? mine is and I would think it might be more difficult because of the button.
