This camera looks like it is in a little container, is that just to protect it from the elements? I want to use it in my rock crawl comp rig so it will probably have some dirt hitting it and stuff. Can it hand that (to an extent)?

Absolutely. The outside case is very durable and can easily withstand dirt. We primarily use these while racing on various tracks across the country. On most tracks there is a large amount of dirt/dust. The case will keep all of that nasty stuff out
