G37 GTR Gauges: Fall 2024 Update

Fall 2024 Update:
Hey everyone, there has been a lot of progress on the GTR gauges over the last few months.
They have been re-written in a different framework (IDF v5.2), added some new features and data logging to SD card.

I didn't provide any updates, as most don't care about the silly bug/issues I needed to chase down.
BUT most do like actual/visual results, which I now have

The latest version of the GTR gauges have been tested on my G37 for the last two months. The core logic dates back to late 2022 and has worked exactly as expected.
At the end of September, I will be releasing a video showing how to bring up the GTR gauges, show all of the new gauges that can now be displayed and the optional data logging items.

Local testing will start at the end of September to verify they work on the different versions of the G37.
(6MT, 7AT, AWD, and Tech package have different messages on the car's CAN bus)

NOTE:
Trans Oil Pressure gauge is re-purposed to show differential oil temp with optional temp sensor.
The top of the gauge / 12 o'clock = 100C or 212F.

Engine oil pressure data is provided via Bluetooth with our Bluetooth Sensor Server.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Hi Frank.

Question. How would one access the display shown through a stock heads-up display?

Also, can you share some of the prep work we need to think about on the gauge side since many of these values are not available on CAN from the factory. Oil and Trans Temp along with Oil Pressure are of particular interest.

Thanks for all the work you've done and coming out with this great product.

Comparing this to the display from Ecutek, are there any advantages of using the GTR interface over Ecutek app?

The "GTR gauges" use the stock, 2010+ nav screen. It requires a one time, single item, re-configuration of the nav system, similar to how tire pressures were enabled.

The "GTR MFD Converter" module is used to receive the oil pressure via Bluetooth and receive/convert/send the required CAN data to feed the GTR gauges.
Engine oil temp and AT7 fluid temp are all standard and work without any additional sensors.
Oil pressure uses Bluetooth, as then we only need to worry about 2 wires. Ignition and ground

By the end of the year, I plan on making some videos on the Nissan/Infiniti CAN bus, how to make cheap CAN bus tools, and strategies to figure out what is what on the CAN bus.

Also, after getting feedback from the beta test, I'll make a full video showing and explaining EVERYTHING, from installation to usage.

Ecutek requires a Ecutek OBD device and a tablet/phone to be mounted and running to display what ever data you have selected. (and there is a lot to pick from!!)

The "GTR Gauges" uses the nav screen and displays the basic items: cornering acceleration (g), auto trans fluid temp, engine oil temp, coolant temp, current gear (for AT7 and MT6), brake line pressure, steering wheel angle and a bunch more. Also, with the optional "Bluetooth Sensor Server" it will display engine oil pressure. (my favorite item to keep an eye on!!)

PLUS all of this can be data logged (optional) to a SD card, which can be downloaded via wifi. (under development now)

As I gather more feedback from the local beta test, I'll make a video clearly explaining everything.

I love this project!! My only regret with all this is that I own a 2008 Non-Nav. I’m guessing the Navigation option is a critical factor to all this. 😥

The first local beta test of the GTR Gauges for the G37 started today!
Over the last few years @hexotic has been very helpful in allowing me to record the CAN bus in his 2011 G37, multiple times.
This was my main source of CAN bus data for an automatic G37, and since he has the Tech Package there is quite a bit more CAN messages, which makes it a better test.

We did meet up last weekend, plugged in the GTR gauges and immediately noticed a problem. The gear position indicator was flashing.
This was due to an error on my part as I didn't properly determine the transmission type, and was sending the gauge cluster the calculated gear for a manual transmission, WHILE the TCM was sending it P for park.
The issue was fixed the next day, I added the gauge cluster to my test bench and then I played back EVERY G37 CAN log I had to verify the fix.

Test Bench:

And a few from @hexotic

Next Steps:
• Build a few more modules and test them some more!

Special thanks @hexotic for always being available to help me!

Correct, it needs 2010+ navigation.

(Sorry, just saw this now)

Good questions!
To bring up the GTR gauges screen, push radio preset button #1 or just use 80% or more throttle.
Yes, if you listen to the radio a lot, it might be a pain to use preset 1, but I wanted an easy to access button... plus I think most use Bluetooth for music, so then it works as you expect. Push a button, the gauges pop up!

OBD on the CAN bus and CAN bus broadcasts are two different things, that get mixed up.
The OBD system does use the CAN bus, but in a client/server way. The OBD device will ask the server for data (ECU) and it will send it.

The GTR gauges don't ask for anything and don't use OBD* they just listen to conversations/messages on the CAN bus/network to get the data.
(* except for boost/MAP as the turbo guys really want that and it isn't on the CAN bus)

The CAN bus the gauges receive data items like engine coolant temp, engine oil temp, auto trans fluid temp, and a bunch of other items 10-50 times per second.
All without asking! That's what nice about tapping into a CAN bus broadcast, you just pick out the data you want!

As for engine oil pressure, I've developed a "Bluetooth Sensor Server" WHICH doesn't require wires from the engine bay to the interior. If you have done that on a G37 it isn't fun or easy.
The Bluetooth Sensor Server is located under the hood, connected to ignition power/ground and the oil pressure sensor plugs into it. This powers the oil pressure sensor, reads the values, and sends it out on Bluetooth.

When the GTR MFD Converter module powers up, it looks for the Bluetooth Sensor Server and connects to it before the NAV system has booted up. (Typically it takes < 1 sec to connect)
I'll have more on this in a video in a while, right now my focus is testing the GTR gauges on the different versions of the G37, then look to start testing on the 2010+ 370z.

All the above has been tested/running on my G37S for almost the last 2 years without any issues, and now local testing has begun to verify that everything works as expected.

Happy to help and happy with the result. Going to be doing some daily use testing to see if any gremlins come out, but for now everything seems to be working perfectly. Kinda cool to be world's first hahaha.
