What's the best head unit for G37s?!

 

I stayed with the oem unit because it was way too much trouble and very expensive to change it for another. You'd have to buy the Metra kit which, cost, quality, and functionality wise, is iffy at best. You'd have to buy an interface to keep the steering wheel controls. The oem unit has Burr Brown 24/96 dacs in the cd section which are very high quality dacs and hard to surpass for sound reproduction.

 

OEM Navigation HU with BT (2012+?) is the best.

If you want to futz with your car constantly, fighting with glitches, there are a few aftermarket options. But, all of them have glitches. METRA kit is cheap and doesn't look right, there's a "Tesla" radio that I would only use as a wheel chock.......

 

Not gonna mess with anything. The most annoying thing is no digital clock. Makes no sense to me why they wouldnt just throw it in there as an option LOL

 

Models with NAV have a digital clock...at least the 2010+'s do...

My '08 non-NAV did not. Once I swapped to the 2014 NAV headunit, then I had the clock. (I turned it off).

 

so whats wrong with the fancy analog clock. those things are expensive you know lol

 

Been kind of considering switching to the NAV unit. How hard was doing the swap over? How much did it cost, all in?

 

Love my Tesla screen but most people hate on it for several reasons (don't get me started lol). I'm in IT and like to tinker so the small issues I have GREATLY outweigh the new, awesome features I have. But to each his own.

 

The good thing about the OEM nav unit, it will be the same 10 years from now as today. The "Tesla" unit won't hold up to 10 years of use. It is reliant on continuous product development. It'd be like having a 10 year old smartphone. You are compelled to replace it every few years to "keep up" with tech, and after a few years many apps stop working as they fall out of development.

My previous car had a pretty good OEM Android Auto/Carplay Navigation HU in it, but I was always getting emails "new firmware available, bring it in for an update" WTF? It's a car stereo! One update, in particular, made the HU a pile of garbage. It worked great for 2 years until that update!

I feel like all of this new tech just compels people to double-down on their consumerist impulses to keep buying more junk.

If someone feels like getting a "Tesla" HU, I would just say please keep your stock HU, wrap it up safely and pack it away. When the car gets passed-on, make sure the OEM HU goes with it. I can't imagine very many people wanting to deal with the "Tesla" setup when the OEM setup works great and would keep most people happy.

 

It is not plug and play. Minor modifications had to be made to my OEM harness. Anyone with average electronics skills and who can accurately decipher wiring diagrams can do the swap fairly easy.

Keep in mind I went from 2008 Bose/non-NAV to 2014 Bose/NAV- so the difference was a big jump.

All in I paid around $250 and that included the headunit, display, USB and GVIF cables, and the switch assembly.

For me, to be able to load a 128gb microsd card with a ton of mp3 and mp4 files and forget about it: priceless.

 

My only concern with this "Tesla-style" thing is security. Like most technology today it can be hacked (especially being Chinese (no offense folks)). What happens then?

Maybe I am being too paranoid in my old age...

 

I bought everything except for the GVIF display cable from eBay. I had to buy the GVIF display cable new from Infiniti (≈$40).

Being you have a Coupe you can get any system from 2010-2015, obviously the newer the better.

My donor was a 2014 Q60.

 

I have an 09 coupe, can I go to a 2010-2015 radio?
