The backup camera on my wife's 2012 M37x works intermittently, and this is a major problem for her because she's short and cannot see over the back, so she is afraid to drive. The dealer wants over $1000 which, for elderly retirees like us is out of consideration.
Another thread suggested testing the camera by turning the audio off; then holding down the settings button, while turning the volume control. This supposedly enters a hidden menu. Tried it several times with no result. I have located a used camera, but need to know if the camera is th eproblem.
Being that the camera works intermittently leads me to suspect a compromised wire/connection. The first thing I would check is the pass-thru wiring harness between the trunk lid and the car body:
I know some G owners have had similar issues with the wires in that harness breaking. Due to the flexing of the wires from opening/closing the deck lid, they become "fatigued" and fail.
The camera itself only has four (4) wires:
RED- CAMERA POWER (HOT in REVERSE)
WHITE- GROUND
YELLOW- CAMERA IMAGE SIGNAL
BLACK- SHIELD (basically a ground)
If all the wires check out, then we can look at the diagnostic (hidden) menu.
