G37 Bluetooth and Apple iPhone XS (and Max)

Hey all,
I know there are a lot of bluetooth threads out there, but I didn't really see a consolidated one. I have a question.

I previously had an iPhone 7 Plus which was spotty at best on both bluetooth audio and bluetooth calls. I now have an iPhone XS Max and have even worse issues. I'm guessing it's due to newer technology in the iPhone vs. Old tech in the 2011 G37S I have.

So...it's been a while since I paired my phone, my question is this: Do I pair first as an audio device and then simply select the paired audio device as the phone or do I have to pair the phone first and then select the phone as the audio device?

Right now it will sometimes play Bluetooth audio, but calls don't work at all. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an xr and a 2011 and have no issues. I connected as audio device first and then as a phone.
