USB charging incredibly slow

For some reason, my usb port inside the center console charges incredibly slow. I'm talking like 5% every hour. If I'm playing music, pretty much stagnant. It even dropped percentage before. Surely this can't be normal, right?

What could be the cause? The cigarette sockets charge perfectly fine.

My only explanation, and it's a bad one haha, is that the port must not be receiving the correct amperage and that this is attributed so the fuse being almost blown to the point where there is only a small amount of current being able to pass. Thoughts?

Most cars OEM USB's are trash. The output is usually around 0.5 amps so that's gonna be the case. They were mostly about being a connection and for file transfer over charging. Get a car charger and be set.

But I like to use it to play music, over bluetooth. Is it possible to somehow up the amperage going to it? It's just weird because a search on here yielded nothing about this matter. If this were the case for everyone, there's no way I'm the only one who's ever had an issue.

Do a search in Google for any cars built-in USB charger, not just the G37, its pretty well known over numerous manufacturers, they aren't normally meant for rapid charging, more so just a connection or last resort. Not sure if things have changed in recent years or not but my '08 charged slow as *****. If the screen was on or used for NAV, it would even lose power still. I grabbed a dual USB car charger with the Qualcomm charging option. One USB is now for my Galaxy and fast charge works, aka like 50% charge in 20 minutes. The other USB is for my Bluetooth receiver that goes into the RCA plugs. Its all stuffed away in the center console and never see it. I love it, wireless or bust, I HATE wires around the car. (this only pertains if you have the RCA plug ins AND the car charger port in the center console, I lucked out)

My 2011 USB doesn't charge ether. It's normal. Unfortunately it is geared to be used as music device or to transfer files, not charge. I agree with you though, idk why automakers wouldn't allow faster charge rates.

I find that the USB only charges my phone when it's off or on airplane mode with no running apps. Otherwise, stick to using portable chargers.

There have been a (very) few people who have had luck on other cars using a powered usb hub. I don't know if anyone has ever tried on a g37. Its on my list of things to figure out, but not a super high priority.

I'm confused about the bluetooth receiver component. Are you saying your G didn't have bluetooth and you connected this receiver to our factory system using RCA's?

Also, in theory, would it be possible to somehow up this amperage. For instance, I presume the usb cable in the center console has 4 main wires. 2 Data, Power, and ground. If I was to cut the power cable and hook it up to one giving more power, like the car socket cable, would that work?

Thats what a powered usb hub would (theoretically) do. USB devices typically (always?) negotiate with the host for power, so merely supplying more wont work.

There was a thread on an car audio forum where someone went to quite a lot of trouble for the similar issue - just with an aftermarket headunit. They stumbled upon a combination that worked with their Pioneer deck, but no clue if it would work with our factory stuff. I'll see if I can find the thread.

Some of the newer generation cars have a USB with more power that will even charge a tablet. I know the new design Honda Pilot has this jack.

Yeah, they get better as they get newer. Most infotainment systems are several years old by the time they hit the road. When infiniti started having the system designed, the iphone 3 was probably the new kid on the block. Our cars probably charge one of them just fine.

There is no such thing as an almost blown fuse.

The problem is either your cable or your device.

My I phone 6S charges quite rapidly thru the USB on my 12v charger plugged into the 12v power socket

I think you are confused. Bluetooth is a wireless technology. If you play your music over bluetooth, just buy a quickcharging adapter to plugin to the cigarette lighter.
