Heads Up Display

Wasn't sure if this was the right place for this so mods pls move as needed.

Storm from the vert forum has a awesome car with some very nice work. He has a semi-heads up display that shows the display on a reflective shield that is fitted into the speaker grill on top of the dash....looks really nice. I went the easy route and got the "iRULU Update A8 Head Up Display" from Amazon. I'm still messing with it but here are the initial thoughts.

1.) Easy plug and play
2.) Read the manual! Changing from Metric to Imperial and tweaking some readings require you read the manual and follow the chart for changing them.
3.) Doesn't really reflect well in sunny conditions but I have not put the plastic sheet supplied on my windshield. Don't think this will help much though
4.) Looks really great in heavy shade and at night.
5.) Trying different locations for placement right now. On top of the dash speaker grate positions the display on the windshield just under the rear view mirror for me. Tried it up by the front left corner of the dash by the roof pillar but the wife took the car so I'm not sure how well it looks in that position.

Will provide more input and pics if others want but for $47 bucks its not bad. Not going to be fighter jet quality but can't expect that. Going to see if there's a spot over head, but hard to do this with a vert.

Also...there are HUD apps for your phone. I tried a couple but opted for the iRULU as it's OBD and gets it power via that connection as well.

Thanks for the review! Post up some pictures of how you decided to install it. I added it to my amazon list but wanted to wait to see how it comes out in your car 1st.

at least get one that matches the G37 interior a little, so it doesn't look like Riceapalooza ...

It doesn't seem like a bad product. At that price point, it's definitely worth a shot. Kudos to trying it out.

In addition to the units of measurement and various readings, does it allow the user to customize anything else (design/layout, color, etc.)? If this was covered in the youtube video, sorry...I didn't look at it. Lol

I agree with Landshark in that it is a tad on the colorful side. The fact that it draws power from the OBDII port is a plus though...no need to source power from someplace else.

Good luck with it and I hope you find a suitable mounting spot. Be sure to post up pics when you get a chance.

i think using an old smartphone with Torque (in HUD mode), along with a Bluetooth OBDII dongle would look best, as you can customize the looks, and it will display what you want. i'm pretty sure you can buy those reflective stick-on windshield squares separately.

either way, you'll have a wire - power for smartphone, or corded OBDII cable to HUD unit. this is why i'm not gonna do it - i don't want wires all over the dash.

J50ny. You can only change the units. Colors and other outputs are not customizable.

Landshark. I agree about the cables. It tried the unit over the speaker grate in the middle of the dash and ran the cord through the steering column so that very little cord was showing. Didn't like the location so I've moved it just by the left pillar for now an am able to hide the cable. I'll post pictures when I get a chance.

^^^ me likey...any pics would be great...also being that its powered by obd connection, does it turn off when engine powers off? or just goes to standby... I had a grand prix gtp with heads up but it was just a basic green, so i actually like all the colors, seems more informative....and oh if it only gave oil temp....

Sorry for dropping off of this....I did get it installed. I'll put up a couple of pics later tonight as it works much better when there is less light.

My take on this is it's not really a big help with monitoring speed, rpm, temp,...it's a nice gadget. The multi-color sounds to be a bit too much for some and you can't modify/change the colors on the display. Setting an audible alarm for max RPM is kind of a nice feature. The unit tends to make a humming noise, which can be a little annoying. I'm trying to find a similar unit that has GPS with the drive ahead feature...that would be neat. Thought I saw Garmin had on but is discontinued. Also, I'm cheap so spending $100s on heads up GPS would not be something I'd do.....Hudway has an app on the iPhone...just haven't had time to test it out.
