I'm looking at getting a used 2011 or 2012 or 2013 G37 coupe.
Some come with built in GPS/NAV, some do not.
Not getting factory GPS/NAV gives me a lot more choices for the used G37 coupe available.
(still want built in back up camera, XM radio, premium stereo)
I guess I'm thinking the aftermarket GPS/NAV, something like the Garmin 2797 with it's 7" screen, is going to offer more and better features, then factory GPS/NAV of a 3 year old G37?
So I'm not really missing out, not getting factory installed GPS/NAV?

 

the factory nav is ok, nothing great.
I would us my phone and google maps......or you can install a nexus 7 in the dash like me =)

 

Guess I might as well go for the Garmin.

 

Blaze, I am looking to install a 7" monitor in place of the factory display so I can install a carPC. I know someone who converted the factory video from RGBs to display on the Nexus 7 so the same should be possible with different monitor. I just need to be able to see climate controls and other stock info when the occasion calls for it. I will need a converter to go from RGBs to VGA or HDMI. Any suggestions?

 

I’ve always thought there are two kinds of Infiniti owners: those who have factory nav and those who are eventually sorry they didn’t get it. Specifically, factory nav usually has the following advantages:

• Less dashboard clutter
• No need to hide or put away a portable device when parking in public
• Integration with other features, e.g., MPG graphs, maintenance warnings, etc.
• Backup camera in earlier models
• Built-in XM radio if desired
• Higher resale value

 

For my 12', the only thing nav gets me is higher resale value and bluetooth streaming. I would have had to pay more for it upfront anyway though. Google maps is infinitely more convenient than the factory nav and is always up to date.

 

True, but the inconvenience of removing or hiding a portable device every time you park in public, including if you’re stuck with valet parking one day, and not including the smashing of a window to get into the car if you choose or forget to remove it, is something I don’t care to chance.

 

Google Maps on my phone which goes with me when I leave my car is where it's at. Has up to date traffic and such too.

 

The nav screen looks way better and more modern than the non-nav.

 

If anyone wants the navigation scree, hard drive, trim panel w/ buttons, harness clips etc... PM me - I have the full kit available (full to me) as I believe it is plug and play if everything is included, but do your own research to confirm. See my part out listing...

 

it doesn't help that there really isn't a good place to mount a phone in the G.
i don't like mounting stuff to the windshield. vents are too narrow for my big-*** phone. best solution for me is an iOttie One-Touch mount to the dashboard. i keep it on the floor in the rear for when i need it - i don't like it cluttering up the dash all the time.

 

You're also leaving out that there is no digital clock in the non-nav.

 

Having built in nav is useful for the masses - also gives you a more upgraded stereo system.

However, the built in nav is completely useless for custom routing. For that I rely on my old garmin and mapsource software to built the route on the pc. Because the pc and gps unit both share identical map data, the route on the gps ends up being precisely what you created on the pc.

Ended up buying a 2013 G37 Coupe with built in Nav.
My map version is "12-13 MAP No 1"
Assuming that means the map is the from 2012-2013, so assuming it never been updated?

 

I’m glad you chose not to be in the “sorry I didn’t get factory nav” group. It seems you have the latest nav version, so I wouldn’t worry about upgrades for a few years.
