Why was the music box eliminated?

I just leased a new 2013 G37x. Previously I had the 2010 model.

I was surprised that the "music box" - the hard drive system that allowed you to burn CDs - was eliminated. I think that's too bad, I enjoyed using it in the 2010 model. I realize CD use has declined, but I still have most of my old music on CDs, and it was much easier to go to the music box and access the music, rather than having to take many CDs on car trips, and keep inserting them in the CD player while driving.

Does anyone know why Infiniti eliminated this feature? Is it possible to install something like this in the audio system?

Given the hard drive memory is so cheap these days, I'm really surprised Infiniti did this. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I don't own a single cd. Once everything was converted to MP3, I found them collecting dust, and gave them to Goodwill.

I'd prefer the music box if it stored mp3s.

My guess is most people already have their favorite music on their smart phones. Music is headed toward BT sync technology and built in Pandora.

I thought the music box was a great new feature when I bought my '08 and still do. Sorry to see it go.

I think they stopped using that programming because of threats of litigation from RIAA. The hardware in the nav system is still all there, all it would take is a firmware upgrade to have music box back.

I have a 12 S coupe with Nav and Cam... I have the Music box ... I wonder if they are only for those systems now? But too I just received a letter saying my nav needs a update... now reading this makes me wonder if this update takes away my music box???
if so i'll skip the update...lol
Note my 12 letter said my G needs 4 updates...
ECU...Window, NAV, and Internal Software update... not sure what the last one means but thought the ECU controls the whole car???

Note...I haven't had one issue with the NAV nor CAM...
Do you guys think its to erase the Music box??
Ill call or go and ask... Strange... got my G Sept if 12

Because it wasn't popular at all. Most people would rather have Bluetooth connectivity and play music form their phone/iPod/USB/device.

If u have old cd's they should be backed up on the PC for iPod/UBS use anyways

Pretty weird that it was just removed like that with nothing to replace it.

I love having a bunch of CDs stashed on it, and use my CF slot for newer stuff, and also my iPod that i'm too lazy to change music on.

I don't use XM because they're a pain to deal with (getting decent rates and canceling mostly)

I'm spoiled by all my options and I want them ALL!

No way the nav update will delete the music box, it is just to update the maps. If it were a firmware update I might be more wary of it. Basically if the dealership took it away I would be highly upset, they would need to replace it or compensate me somehow.

I actually had asked this question to Infiniti, the reason the Music Box is no longer available is due to copyright issues. Not exactly sure how but they said the music that was being stored in the music box was not actually purchased but downloaded illegally. As if nobody nowadays doesn't download like that

I wouldn't mind if the music box option wasn't there as I've gone the iPod route anyway.
