Does a 12"Sub NEED a custom Box?

Sen alot of past posts about getting custom boxs for 12" and 10" Was wondering if anyone bought a 12"box that didnt have to be made custom as those cost more then the sub.

Thanks.

The best box i found would be a zenclosure single 12 for a g35 coupe. Although its for a 35, with minimal cutting it fits perfect in 37 coupe. You can get either square or circle but its a great box! Ill post pics soon

It depends on what you are going for. You can get a really cheap prefab box. It won't sound it's best. You could buy a free air sub that doesn't require any box at all. Determine your budget and sound goals and post them, it'll be easier for people to advise you.

My amp:
JL Audio XD700/55-channel car amplifier — 75 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms + 300 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms

I was looking at this sub:
Infinity 1262w12" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils
Power range: 100-300 watts RMS (1,200 watts peak power)

These arent cheap items and I was looking at buying a higher end 8-gauge wiring kit. The box for the sub was around $40. That was one cost I was looking forward to it not being that much.

The zenclosure looks great but we are heading into more expensive territory. This is why I asked if anyone knew of any smaller boxes as the customs just get expensive. If thats the way I have to go then so be it, but I would like to see if anyone found a cheaper alternative.

GREAT quality and even better customer service. Knu is one of the best for wires and 12 volt electrical odds and ends.

that sub will work well in a ported or a sealed box. A sealed box will sound the same as long as the internal air space is the same. A ported box takes a little more time and effort to build but it maybe worth it to you.

I would buy a decent sealed box and call it a day. The custom enclosures are nice but it doesnt sound like its something you want to do.

A box is a box is a box. As long as the box has enough volume in it for the sub and it is designed as sealed or ported or vented, it will work. When you talk about "custom" box, I'm assuming you are talking bout a box that fits your trunk and gives you usable space. Any sub box that matches the specs of your sub will work. Will it look good in your trunk? probably not. Will you have trunk space left? probably not. If you want your trunk to be functional then a "custom" box is what you need. If you don't care, then throw in any rectangular sub box and it will work just as well.

Zenclosure expensive? Zenclosure is actually cheap. Custom boxes/fiberglass box can easily be 300$-500$++.

Easiest route would be the zenclosure. Just get a single 10", if you want more bass get the dual 10" route.

40$ for a box sounds like one of those piece of crap pre-fab box. Usually they'll be cheaply made out of really thin material. If you do get one at least make sure you get one with sufficient internal cuft space for a subwoofer.
