iPod quick search?

I searched the forums, but didnt really find an answer...
Is there a way to quickly scan through albums / artists?

I have about 8000 songs on my ipod... maybe 1000 artists etc. and its just a pain in the *** to get to anything past the "A's".

I cant search on the ipod, because its connected via interface.
And i have not found a way to pull up a menu or alphabet on the cars system.

i had read that if you turn the **** fast, it will start scrolling through letters, but mine doesnt do that....

Have i missed the obvious?

To my knowledge, you can't scroll around on your iPod. But, if you jailbreak your iPod their is a tweak called "noaccsplash" and it will let you scroll around or you can put your iPod on shuffle and use the music controls on your steering wheel or radio.

Mine is always on shuffle. I like not knowing what song might be next, if I don't want to hear it at the time it's easy to skip. I almost never skip past more than one song.

FYI, with yesterdays iOS 6.1 update, Apple removed the "Accessory Connected" screen while docked and your now able to control your ipod/iphone directly while connected. I tried it out today and theres no longer a "Accessory Connected" screen.
