Lightbulb Homebrew iPod control from steering wheel

Not sure what this post is - its not a question as such, just putting my thoughts out there in case anyone has ideas/comments/suggestions...
My problem: my '10 UK Coupe doesn't have iPod integration (or 'SAT' radio) - only audio aux in. A real shame but hey, I couldn't have afforded a newer one so would have missed out on the G37 pleasure entirely.
(Its maybe an established make in the US, but soooo rare over here - 6 stealerships in the whole lil country - and boy is mine turning heads )
I've cautiously pulled the system out of the dash slightly, and couldn't feel any unused sockets round the back, so I suspect there's no 'hidden' signals I could use either. Will maybe risk pulling it right out to double-check.

So, I've got a Dension adapter to hook iPod to the aux input, but obviously that lacks track info display and control from steering wheel buttons. I'm not too bothered about the former (I know what I'm listening to), but even being able to go track fwd/back from steering wheel would be useful.
I figured the steering wheel controls are probably CAN-bussed, so starting looking through the Service Manuals to see if a CAN receiver could be hooked into the system and used to drive the iPod interface. From what I've seen so far though, it looks like the switches are a 'resistive ladder' to a connector (somewhere), so I'm thinking I can probably hang a circuit off that to patch over to the iPod.
All I need to do now is find the connector, and get to grips with the iPod interface.....!

As I said - this is 'early days' thinking, so would welcome any useful ideas/comments or discussion from anyone out there.

(Mind you, part of me isn't too bothered about audio - still loving the sound of that engine Sounds even better than my V6 Alfa did!)
