XM NavTraffic
But I would be interested in your response to some of the negatives of portable devices that have been previously discussed in other threads:
• It’s a suction-cup, adhesive pad, clip-on or friction mounted device that adds clutter to an otherwise clean looking dash.
• It should be removed every time you park in a public lest it be stolen (if not a side window broken also).
• It takes your eyes off the road much more than your factory nav, certainly with screen sizes 5" or less compared to the factory nav 7".
I would also ask how it’s powered. Is it from a battery that needs to be recharged from time to time, or powered through a car charger via a 12 volt plug with wires dangling somewhere?

No.1 - Yes the TOM TOM comes with a built-in friction mounted device and they also supply plastic Disk that can mount to your dashboard and the unit then adheres to the disk (like a rock, I might add)...But rather than spending say, $2 K for Navi systems, it is a much cheaper alternative. We got this unit for our son who drives a 2010 Subaru Legacy. He found it too busy and too much of a nuisance to rig it up. He uses his Droid phone as a GPS.
No.2: Yes, being in the NYC area, You can't leave anything out in sight in your car.
No.3: That's a possibility, byt that's difficult to measure. The Tom Tom unit is a 5" screen, clear as a bell, and announces when approaching turns, what lane to be in for approaching highway exits, has Microphone button to request a vocal command for a destination or for a POI location like "find the nearest Dunkin Donuts". It has Bluetooth too. But the best aspect is the Traffic function: knocks the sox off the G's XM Traffic....
It's powered by a 12volt connection - wires do dangle a little, unless you use the supplied disk attached to the dashboard.
Almatti,
Well, I do appreciate your honest answers that seem to confirm some of the negatives associated with portable devices. But if the Tom-Tom has features you like, including superior XM traffic, then it is obviously best for you.

XM has been hounding me for the last week. I knew it was them after googling the 800 # that showed up on the CID.
My trial ran out mid march. Since all my music is on USB, I had no interested in the radio portion of it. But I did let the kid do the sales pitch for the traffic portion.
Their offer, 5 months for $10, taxes/fees included. For $2 a month, it's acceptable as coverage is decent in chicago. I used a disposable credit card #, so if they attempt to charge again, it'll decline. They rep did say to call in before the renewal to see what other promos are available at that time.
ymmv.
