Most Cost Effective Stereo Upgrade
Most Cost Effective Stereo Upgrade
Thinking of picking up an 07/08 G35 or 09 G37 sedan. I compared the stereo quite thoroughly between my Volvo S60R and the Acura RL and Acura Tl/Tl-Type S. The Acura and the Volvo system sound virtually identical (I think they may be the same Bose 5.1 system). The Infiniti premium stereo is still a good step behind. Most noticeable is the lack of deep punchy bass. I believe this is because there is no dedicated subwoofer and it uses woofer cones in the doors?
I crossing my fingers that the stock speakers are good enough quality for the mids and highs alone.
My days of dumping a lot of money in aftermarket stuff into my cars are long gone, but I am somewhat of an audiophile so I'm not willing to take a step back in audio quality, well, maybe a tiny step back is okay. My guess is the most cost effective mod would be to be capacitors on the woofers in the doors filtering at about 120hz at 6db/octave, or dual-pass at 80hz at 12db/octave and then throw a small but efficient powered subwoofer in somewhere in the car. The trunk is already small so I don't want something that fills 1/4 or more of the trunk space although something that is easy to unplug and remove may be okay but I think nowadays they have some pretty crazy little subs you can fit into nooks and crannys or mount attached to the underside of the back deck? Hopefully a good solution for $300 or less?
I'm thinking maybe 6-1/2" or 8" powered bazooka tube mounted on the underside of the back deck with some sort of quick release system?
I see those under the seat subwoofers but from many years of experience, although I'm sure they improve a mediocre stock system but by design they have to be pretty limited in how clean/low of bass they can produce.

I'm not sure about the sedan but the back of my couple has 2x 10" woofers connect to a woofer-amp in the trunk.
I added 2 10" subwoofers and a 2800W amp. I also made a 3 ways switch so I can switch between stock amp, aftermaket, or have both running. It sounds way better with the aftermarket subwoofers on.
