What I am doing with my non-Bose stereo

So I got the car last month and first thing i noticed was how horrible stereo sound was. I went around and got a pair of new model Kenwood speakers. When I listened to them at the shop I was very impressed how clean and natural the sound was, and at the same time they produced very deep and powerful bass.
So I got them installed in my doors on Kenwood buffer boards, and clean sound was there, but the bass was lacking. I don't listend to music at high volume but I do want some bass (Had a Pioneer 1000w 12" sub in the trunk in my previous car). When I turn the volume up, the bass is there, and there is no distortion, so speakers do have potential. I narrowed it down to the useless head unit.
The way I want to tackle this problem is install an amp with adjustable bass boost. It will go in the trunk, under the plastic cover next to the spare. We have successfully opened and explored it with Autobacs staff. It's really amazing how much space is absolutely wasted there.
The reasons why I am not going for a sub just yet are:
1. Space. don't want to sacrifice any trunk space, and it can't go under plastic cover where my amp will because unlike amps, subs need lots of air.
2. I bought speakers for their bass ability. Cutting off bass from them would be a waste.
So I need a good amp now. Market and prices are a bit different here in japan so can't really ask for much advice, even though I really like the rockfort, those are really expensive in Japan. But here is one question: I can get a used amp which would be a few years old for very cheap. Are older amps any good? Especially from Alpine, Panasonic, Nakamichi or Pioneer? Those go used for less than 100 dollars!
So all in all, amp+speakers+installation for both will all total me close to a 1000 dollars.
So here is consumer advice of the year: If you are buying a G37, for God's sake get one with Bose option!

So is there anything else I should do besides getting a sub that can improve sound without putting me on welfare? like rear speakers?

hey - a little OT, but does anyone know of a double din head unit that will also work with the input from the HVAC and other systems?
