I am an old guy (40 is old for this forum at least) and I have 5000 + songs on the 80GB Ipod I bought last week soley for the G37S. It says that I have 16.2 days worth of nonstop repeat music.

How many hours/days/weeks do you guys have that have an ipod?

i only use a 2gb nano in the car.

probably 300 songs? not really sure. i like that its smaller because theres less stuff to scroll through (because the ipod interface is kind of stupid) and i can find the song(s) iw ant easier.

i konw there are ways around dealing with scrolling through all the artists/songs (like doing it by alpha genres) but i'm too lazy.

anyway, playlists are your best friend when it comes to ipod in the G.

Does iTunes count that by the length of the songs or the sizes of the files or what? My files vary quite a bit in bitrate, so done by size would be pretty far off

I would assume ITUnes just read the length since that is something it has on every file.

The general rule of thumb seems to be 3000 songs is equal to about 8 days worth of nonstop music. This could vary if you have a higher bitrate on your music.

I dont go with a huge bitrate because the music is being played in a car which is not the worlds best platform for no distortion music.

Some buddies and I started collecting music last year and ran across an ex DJ who donated a 250 gig hard drive to the effort.

The DJ said that his drive would require just over three months of listening time.

Other thoughts on the subject:

I've got just under half of my 80 gig ipod loaded for a total of about 225 albums/CDs. That turned into a pita due to the limited search capabilities of the ipod through the G37 interface so I won't fill it up. I don't have them organized, though.

Found an SD to CF convertor that looks promising so I bought one and will create "play lists" on micro SD chips. The 2 gig units (prutkow says about 300 songs worth) are less than $10 and the 4 gig units are getting cheap, too. CF cards are getting harder to find and the price is still pretty high vs SD.

That should fix the search issue, changing SD chips would no worse than changing CDs and, to my ears, the sound quality of music on my CF sounds better than the ipod even at the same bit rate.

Any thoughts on that idea?
