If you are asking these many questions, then you already think it's a bad idea.

Rasp: obviously. It's a test pipe.
At least go resonated to minimize a bit a drone, loudness, and rasp. Whatever you choose, get a good brand.

I went resonated high flow cats and will never look back. That is my recommendation if you are planning on getting a catback in the future.
What future mods are you planning on the car?

You just confirmed my gut feeling. I plan on going with berk or fi hfcs. In the future just some more bolt ons, no forced induction.

The non-resonated cats from BERK have a 200 cell count of catalyst material. Matched up with the OEM cat-back, it will be noticeably louder and sound really nice. Berk+OEM is a bonafide power and sound mod. However, if you match that with an aftermarket cat-back, say hello to rasp. Supposedly, that problem is mitigated with FI cats, which use a 300 cell count catalyst. And even more so with their resonated cats.

Take that with a grain of salt. It's all hearsay after years of lurking. But that's the reasoning used when I bought FI RHFC's this year, in prep for next year's cat-back.

I dont have berks but have 2.5" test pipes on mine, with a muffler delete. The smell is not bad at all i like it actually smells like a 2 stroke outboard engine smoke but not nearly as strong. Everyone hears test pipes and immediately think of RASP but you only get rasp like the first 5 minutes after a cold start. BTW i got a trophy for best exhaust sound at autocross. I will change to a catback exhaust in the next month or so, but im holding back on it because i love the current sound.

Try a y pipe and resonated/nonresonated test pipes. Or try high flow cats. BTW BB just posted a thread about people who ask their own questions on other people threads and sending them out of topic.

I am leaning towards the berk. Any opinions on the stillen hfcs? This is for a daily driver and will be using the stock catback.

Anyone gut their stock cats? I know your ruining an expensive, part, just wondering how it came out as it appears cats are still there. I have done this on old v8s but the sound didnt change as the h and flowmasters drowned it out.

The O2 sensor connectors on the Berks are stubby, so you may or may not have issues with codes. FI uses a J-shaped extension that seems to work very well.

I did this for the pre-cats on my Maxima, and it was a nice little power/sound modification. However, I also had an O2 Simulator wired into the circuitry. And those were just pre-cats; the main cat was still in the mix. (Three cats on that car... very weird.)

I have yet to see discussion in this forum about O2 Sims. IDK why.

I have in the past created a sim with resistors from radioshack on buick regal gs's. Worked well and no codes. Could also extend the o2 with foulers.

So...
  • You're keeping the OEM cat-back.
  • You're cool with whatever it takes to keep the O2 sensors in range.

If that were me, I'd get the Berk, too.

Yeah I was trying to decide between FI RHFCs and Berk HFCs for my sedan. I plan to keep the stock catback for sure. I was afraid that the Berks may be too raspy but that the RHFCs may be too quiet. I'm just looking to add a noticeable rumble. I've read every HFC thread. Sounds like the performance difference between the two is negligible. I ordered the RHFCs yesterday but now am rethinking that they wouldn't be enough. Anyone else have thoughts on the two setups?

I am tempted to buy a pair of tests to try seeing their are a few that are inexpensive. Anyome who has reasonated or nott with stock put up a clip.
Anyone have bumper staining with test pipes?
How worse does the car smell? I know the whole garage reaks like poison gas on start up now and that is stock!
