Electronic Steering Column Lock (ESCL)
For those who have had this issue please report below, there is another thread that we can use for chat, but for this one I would like people to document the following
Model Year - ex: 2010 Model Type - ex: G37s Sedan Mileage - ex: 20,123 Cost of Repair - $part $labor Nissan has addressed this problem in most of their 2009-2010 lineup. The ones I have been able to confirm are for the Nissan Cube, Altima, Maxima, 370Z & GTR. All of these share the same ESCL unit. The Revision A/B & C units have been problematic, and some D revisions. The current model is Revision E. In 2012 Nissan discontinued the use of the failing steering lock system all together. Nissan has stepped up and extended warranty to cover parts and labor on their vehicles while Infiniti it turning a blind eye. Here is a quote from NissanAssist.com REASON FOR WARRANTY EXTENSION Your Nissan vehicle is equipped with an Electronic Steering Column Lock (ESCL) unit that locks the steering wheel when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off to help prevent theft. On some vehicles, due to a manufacturing irregularity that has since been corrected, the ESCL may malfunction after the vehicle is locked and could prevent the engine from starting. This condition, should it occur, will only occur when attempting to start the vehicle, and not while driving. WHAT NISSAN IS DOING Although Nissan believes the majority of owners will never experience this unique condition, to assure your continued satisfaction and confidence in your vehicle, Nissan has decided to extend the Nissan New Vehicle Limited Warranty, as it applies to the ESCL unit, from 3 years / 36,000 miles to 6 years / unlimited miles, whichever comes first. While there are bypasses for this system it is still not a fix. You can cut the brown wire going to the system, voiding warranty. You can pull the fuse to disable it, however then your wheel is no longer locked when the car is parked, an important theft safety feature. There is also a bypass harness being made by forum members on The370Z.com. This is not a random occurrence, but more of a time bomb. Please help get Infiniti to take notice and responsibility for this! 2010 370Z: 2010 Nissan 370Z TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) | NissanProblems.com 2009 370Z: 2009 Nissan 370Z TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) | NissanProblems.com 2010 GTR 2010 Nissan GT-R TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) | NissanProblems.com 2009 GT-R 2009 Nissan GT-R TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) | NissanProblems.com 2009 Nissan Cube 2009 Nissan Cube TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) | NissanProblems.com 2009 Nissan Altima & Maxima NissanAssist.com |

I am finally picking up my 2009 g37x today after paying $1260. I responded above. The dealer has had it for 5 weeks and a day. They say the part was on back order which caused the delay. I have to assume its because so many are experiencing failures. Has anyone had luck with Infiniti corporate in getting assistance or a response here?

Model Type - G37 Sedan Mileage - 59,000 Cost of Repair - $1300 Well my car experienced this failure last week. Towed to Nissan dealership and got the work order set up. The part is on back order for 2 weeks! It baffles my mind that Nissan would issue recalls on several of their car models but not on Infiniti, it is the same part! |
Mine failed today. Luckily it was intermittent, after hitting the start button and wiggling the steering wheel a few times I got it to unlock. After that I searched the issue and found this: Steering Lock: cut one wire. /switch optional - Nissan 370Z Forum
It was a super simple fix. Just cut one wire while its unlocked and you will never have to worry about the failure again. This just saved me the $1100+ others are paying to have this fixed. By the way mine is: 2010 G37x 79,XXX miles |
Cutting the wire is kind of a crude way to do it. I would prefer a non-permanent modification such as pulling the fuse or at least buying the bypass harness.

Model: G37s Mileage: 90,000 Cost: $1700.00 Car would not start but the fob was locking and unlocking the car. I towed to dealership and the took 2 days to figure out that the steering lock needed to be replaced. I have not approved the repair and contemplating on having it done or getting ridnofbthe car. I don't think I should be responsible for a part that has been recalled in other vehicles. Has anyone had any luck in reimbursement for the charges? |
