Nissan steering lock recall
 

So the guys at the370Z are posting a lot of steering lock failures.

Just read there, about a steering lock recall for 2009-early 2010 370Zs and GTRs.

I havent heard much here about that issue, dont we use the same??

what is the malfunction that it's being recalled for?

not locking? not unlocking?

i would think that this is kind of a big problem.

Is this the lock that keeps your steering wheel from turning when in P(ark)? I don't think the MT's have this?

No, this is the lock for the steering wheel. When you turn off the car and open the door, the steering wheel is locked. When the steering lock fail, the steering wheel does not unlock and the engine will not start. I've seen many failures on the 370z but none from G37s. However, in 2012, infiniti eliminated the steering lock just like the 370z.

Volvo got wise and discontinued theirs in 2009!!

Mine failed last night on the sedan. I've found plenty of recalls for the Altima, Maxima, 370Z & GT-R but Infiniti is ignoring it. $1100 fix. I have a call in to consumer affairs right now, but I've found the Z & Altima guys made up petitions to get them noticed. Any way to get something like that going on here? Record date/mileage and repair cost?

If anyone else here has the issue please report. I have a call into consumer affairs about the issue. Mine was actually backwards compared to most, it got stuck UNLOCKED but still kept the car from starting. If I do not hear good news from them tomorrow I will just pay from pocket and seek reimbursement. I posted on the Infiniti USA facebook page and surprisingly got quite the quick response. Supposed to have an answer by end of business day Tuesday. I plan on starting a thread to document the infiniti owners with the same issue to get this noticed by infiniti and possibly get those who have paid from pocket reimbursed.

The issue comes from the 2009-2010 model Nissan/Infiniti vehicles using the Revision A/B/C model steering locks (ESCL). They have said in the Nissan Cube, Altima, Maxima, 370Z & GTR the issue is due to excessive oil used in the part during manufacturing which causes and electrical failure inside the box. The unit can be bypassed prior to the issue happening by cutting a wire, or removing the fuse, however this can not be used as a fix after the issue has occured. Cutting the wire obviously will void the warranty. There is a guy on the Z forums who has built a bypass harness to prevent the issue.

So, please, anyone who has had this issue, please report in the thread I will be posting later today. I will add a link in this thread to it once I create it.

2009 G37 4dr Steering Lock failure
 

I've recently had an engine swap and still havent been able to crank or get a spark from the engine. I have notice that my key fob isn't registering with the vehicle alarm, unlocking or locking anything unless inserted into the key fob slot. I dont get the immobilizer solid red light anymore, just when I insert the key and hit the start button it bypasses the ACC mode and goes straight to ON.I can hear the fuel pump engage. Headlights, brake lights and all other in cabin electronics work! So I'll be replacing the Steering Lock Module and pretty sure that'll fire it up! I thought it was the ecu or IPDM and it is not. Please let me know if any of this makes sense thanks!

Sounds like the issue. Have fun you will have to drop the entire steering column and remove the gauge housing panel. Time consuming. Also there are two safety bolts to remove, some have had luck removing with needle nose, mine had to be drilled out. The replacement bolts are $6 each as well and I have two laying around if you want them. Be careful not to turn the steering wheel while you have the shafts disconnected because it is very easy to damage the spiral cable.

Mine failed today :mad: Luckily it was intermittent, after hitting the start button and wiggling the steering wheel a few times I got it to unlock. After that I searched the issue and found this: Steering Lock: cut one wire. /switch optional - Nissan 370Z Forum

It was a super simple fix. Just cut one wire while its unlocked and you will never have to worry about the failure again. This just saved me the $1100 others are paying to have this fixed.

I want to pull the fuse for the steering column lock. Can someone tell me where to find it?

I usually put in the car in the acc mash the brakes slide the shift knob to n neutral make sure the n sign is on ur dash and then mash or press the brakes to start it... if u put in park the yellow key sign will activate ... u could take a hammer and hitting unit but thats temporary fix

Mine failed. Get the car to recognize by moving the key around and pushing start many times. Once it does this you'll have to remove to the steering lock fuse in the underhood fuse box.
I learned in here how to do it.
