Help. Devon's cars having issues!! Won't start or stalls out sometimes.

Devon's hijack from another thread. I thought i'd be nice and start this for you.

Offical Highjack in progress......Well, ok so I went and bought some fireworks on Sunday by Arundle Mills, had to drive through a dirt parking lot(not fast) to leave and I pulled up to a light. I was on a slight decline(nose of car sloped down) and all of a sudden the car starts to idle very bad and stalls out. I try and restart it and it won't start......it finally starts and the car is knocking very loud and barley accelerates. This is after two attempts to start and horns blowing at me.....so I limp it to a parking spot and try and start again...same thing sputter and knocks......no check engine light........it dies again and then after trying to start it a 5th time it starts sputers real quick them runs fine. Still no cel's, but now the car runs fine. I do notice that the car idles very low some times.....I'm confused...any suggestions? As for parts, just an intake and spacer. Exhaust should be ordered, but I don't have that on yet.

My thoughts, water in the gas?

It very well could be that. Also, is your spacer on and aligned good? or loose at all?

wnt1bd Jul 6, 2005 02:38 PM

I will double check spacer this evening. Crossing fingers big time.

Devon,

While your under the hood, double check your MAF sensor connection too. Id even unplug it and plug it back in to make sure its in all the way.

wnt1bd Jul 6, 2005 02:52 PM

I will try everything. Cross your fingers. I hate when dumbsh!t stuff like this happens. It always makes me nervous for the next upgrade.

Hey Devon have you ever reset the ecu.

brian2004 Jul 6, 2005 03:05 PM

Did you wash undre the hood.(water in the distributor).Maybe water in the gas.

wnt1bd Jul 6, 2005 03:14 PM

Did a ECU reset after it first happened....happened again today....as for washing under the hood, NEVER I hand wipe the engine bay. I hope it's bad gas or a little water in the tank.

Brian our cars run distributorless DIS (distributorless ignition system) (ie. no spark plug wires etc). I think most cars after (01-02??) run w/o a distributor and spark plug wires etc etc. ;)

That's nuts. If it was bad gas...you wouldn't have been able to start the car anymore. It would have just died out. I read a thread on this for drivers in MD having bad gas. Now the question is why did it happen now? You've had the spacer and intake for a while right? What changed or was done differently to cause this to happen? What did you do just before that? The dirt road maybe?

OK, UPDATE!!!!!! ANYONE who has the Motordyne Spacer needs to check out the rubber sticky tabs that stick the spacer washers to the upper part of the plenum. When I took my plenum apart last night ALL of the spacers rubbers stickies were melting or GONE!! I have now removed my spacer. After having a neighbor come over and inspect my valves, we did notice sticky residue on the bottom portion of the spacer. This make me VERY angry that something this pricey for a piece of aluminum has rubber stickey washers that literally melt in the chamber! I will be emailing Motordyne with my find. As of this morning after cleaning the plenum everything is running fine. Anyone who has this spacer should do a recheck on who those little washers are doing.

Devon,

I was one of the first few people who received the spacer about...3-4 mos ago. I havent had any problems with the spacer thus far but just the thought of having to pop open the hood and remove all those bolts....sounds too tedious!! I may check it out and see what happens. I am not sure if the stickies your referring to were simply there for ease of install or actually have some functional use. If you've ever touched the plenum you'll notice how HOT it gets which makes me believe they would melt and I would HOPE that Tony from Motordyne would not have overlooked this. Regardless I think you should post this in the Coupe forum for all others to be aware of and to let Tony chime in on!!

DAMN!!! good thing none of them fell into your engine. You are talking about those little brown circles, right? Did you try to tighten your bolts before you took it off? Meaning, were they loose?

For some reason I can not post on this site, I can reply , but can not start a thread. I would like to put out a POSSIBLE problem. I do not like to point fingers at products, but if this is a true problem then this can be very serious. I am just glad I checked it out before I took it to the dealer. It is very possible that if these are melting that they WILL fall into the runners then in turn either stick to the valves or right into the cylinder. Granted that it is only rubber, that still can foul up injectors and even make your valves stick, whick is what I think was happening to me.

The washers that came with my setup were white double sided donuts (3M) and were made of like a foamy/spongy material. They were def. NOT rubber, and I am not sure what the newer spacers or those with the recent purchases have been receiving. Just to be safe I may remove mine and take some pics.
