when I got rear ended on the freeway, the other driver took off. I was following him while on the phone with CHP. I gave them the license plate # and they advised me to pull over. A CHP cruiser showed up where I pulled over about 15 min after and took the report. I got a call from my insurance about 2 weeks later and they informed me that CHP found the other driver and went to his house to question him.

Yeah, sometimes the police are slow to respond, I had the car in front of me drive off the road and into the swamp once and it took the police almost 45 minutes to respond.
Glad your G wasn't seriously damaged and that you're okay. Now comes the fun part of dealing with the insurance companies. |
Things like these are always a hassle and cause frustration. Cars (and other things) can be fixed. Just be glad that you're ok!
|
Glad you are ok it could have been much worse! That seems like such a hassle in the first place and then for the cops not to show up. The same exact thing happened to me with the same damage, and I was wondering if you tried just pushing in the side of the bumper because mine locked back in.
Glad your ok! |

Unless there is a law broken a traffic accident is only a civil issue...that's why the police don't do anything other than provide you the report and they file it for record.
That's actually the way it's always been...in the past Police may have filled it out while you gave them the information, but today they are so busy with too many other issues. For a civil issue they don't have to do anything other than provide you the form. |

So the OP is from NY. If he saw the other driver was on the phone when hit him, he broke the law.
OK...from OP "I recall the guy wasn't tailgating. He kept enough distance. He just kept going and applied the brake too late." |

Then, he was tailgating in that the margin of safety was too small for his reactive/attentive capabilities.

Yes, I'm confident that body shop will fix it up and it will be like new. But I wasn't happy with the way the police responded to the situation.

There were no injuries, why waste their time. At least you guys were polite enough to leave the road to settle out. In LA, they stay in the fast lane of the freeway until a CHP shows up. |

Alas...no law is broken for being stupid...
Unfortunately...if there were laws for being stupid, maybe there wouldn't be as many people driving on the roads...:D |
