So, based on these issues, and all the other knows issues with the various model years of our cars:

If we are going to buy a used G37 (AWD Sedan for me), what is preferred, what should be avoided, and what tests and precautions should be made ???

After the TERRIBLE treatment I have received from Infiniti Consumer Affairs (Jordan C.) I will NEVER buy a new Nissan product and will never own a Nissan outside of warranty.

Extended Warranty is your friend.

But, when the warranty runs out, like mine just did, Infiniti Consumer Affairs f@cks you.

So, still looking for the answers to my questions:

2011 models or newer won't have this particular issue. With any used car purchase, get an independent technician to perform a thorough pre purchase inspection.

Always do this. Even if it's from a dealer.

Hi Guys, same issue here. My 2010 G37x Sedan has 77,000 miles on it. The car went into Limp Mode, check engine light came on, and I had the same codes (P0524, P0021, P0011). Took it to my independent mechanic who diagnosed it. Oil pressure at idle was 5psi. They changed the oil & filter, and did a flush to see if a dirty solenoid was to blame. The pressure went back up and it road tested fine.
After reading the posts here about the worst case scenario, I had a feeling it was only a matter of time before it returned. I had the car for about 10 days and the check engine light cam back on, and the car went into Limp Mode again. Took it back to my mechanic, they checked it our again, and recommended it be towed to the Infiniti dealership. The dealership diagnosed it as needing a new rear timing cover. 18 hours of labor @$140; $3,090 plus tax.
I called Infiniti Consumer Affairs and they were not interested in helping out past the 6 year/70K powertrain warranty. I think this is unconscionable as it is a known problem with these specific engines. The dealer gave me a 10% discount, which they didn't have to do.
Here is a pick of the old timing cover. You can see the torn gasket on the left.

For three grand i think i would have pulled the front end of the car off and replaced the cover myself. It can't be that hard once you gain complete access to the front of the engine.

Hey Infiniti Consumer Affairs - thanks for making it a no brainer to ditch your brand for a new Lexus. You could have easily sold my wife a new Q50. She loved the way they look and even liked driving it as a service loaner. It would have been our 7th consecutive Nissan/Infiniti vehicle. But I really appreciate you sending us to the competition and breaking the streak. The new Lexus GS350 we just bought is really nice and a lot more refined. The Mrs is really happy with it, more than she ever was with her G.

Now when Betty gets retired, I'll seriously shop the competition. The ATS-V, RC F, and S5 are all calling to me louder than the new Q60 so far. Maybe one day you'll get your crap together, pull your head out of your azzes, and do a better job of taking responsibility for your screw ups and keeping long term loyal customers happy. You've still got a chance at my $60-70K. Earn it.

You know you want that ats-v...

When shopping for dad's car last year, brand loyalty brought us first to the altima. The driving experience and too common cvt failure left me unsatisfied. We ended up getting a honda accord instead. It's still a driving appliance, but hopefully holds up better than an altima would.

What is the typical mileage for this gasket to **** the bed? I just turned 68K, and she's been far from babied with a few track days.

It does have a complete extended warranty until 2018 or 100K.

Mine's an 09.

^ it seems reported mileages are all over the map. some low milers have the problem while some high milers never have a problem. mine was replaced under warranty at ~42000 miles IIRC. driving style and service life also seems to have little to no impact on whether or not the paper gasket will tear. it's a total crap shoot. anything pre-2012 may or may not have the problem, and at varying intervals.

for what it is worth, my dealer had only done a very few of these warranty repairs so it is certainly not a given that every pre-2012 G will have a failure. the issue has a higher reporting rate on here because this is where people go to vent and report bad things. just like the whole CSC issue for 6MT owners. my dealer had only done a couple of these over the past 5-6 years. in the overall scheme of things it (the gasket + the CSC failures) is still an uncommon - but not unheard of - occurrence.
