PAINT CONUNDRUM 09 vs 10

Ok, It's been announced that the 2010 Infiniti Coupes will return to the previous cross-linked clear coat replacing the much ballyhooed self-healing paint. Would it be a logical conclusion that because the self-healing paint was used only one year, that it was either a functional or durability failure. Or is it strictly a financial decision? I see there are numerous complaints in reference to paint finish and durability on the 370z forums, however the 09 Z apparently uses the cross-linked clear that the 10 Infiniti's will utilize. Is there any definitive insight within the "G" brain trust????

All I know is there are tons of complaints about the 08 paint, & I don't see nearly as many for the 09.

I dont understand why everyone complains about soft paint. Does anyone know a car that doesnt swirl easy or get rock chips? Swirls will happen, thats why you detail. not like this issue just started with the g37

I too am curious as to why they are no longer using the self healing clearcoat. My dealer made a pretty big deal out of it, and now it is discontinued.

Would love to know why.

I have not had a single complaint about the self healing paint. It hides swirls. I don't recall many complaints about this finish. Most complaints I've read on here were about pre self healing paint scratching and chipping easily.

The self-healing paint is often mis-represented, and causes Infiniti a lot of PR problems.

I think this is probably a big part of it. People hear "self healing" paint and they think it will cover up scratches and chips. It's not THAT good (yet ).

I think some of it is also the Cost/Benefit that Infiniti managers look at...sure it's nice to have and a cool new product, but is that worth the cost of production/PR problems?

I have no problem with the paint on my 09G, but I can understand why they might want to shy away from it for now

+1. My Maxima has soft paint, so did my G35. Get a light colored car if the inevitable swirls bother you and you don't want to spend the money to get them fixed.

People complain because other manufacturer's paint is not as susceptible to swirls and light scratches so easily as Nissan/Infiniti clear coat is.

I have actually induced swirls simply by drying the car with a clean microfiber towel if I use too much pressure. That is too soft. I own and have detailed many other vehicles by different manufacturers and this is not the case at all.

+1 Exactly the owner feedback I've received.

I'm sure if you go to any car forum, they will each complain about the weakness of their car paint. BMW forum will complain theres is too soft, Acura will complain theres is too soft etc ...

I think the last of the good paint for DD's was back in the 1990's? Most all auto forums I've visited have paint as a top complaint.

The 4th Gen. maximas and the 1995 ZX and SX models used Cross-Linked Paint.
