What's this noise?

Here is the stinkin' noise......

Notice after i turn the car off, and turn it back on....THE NOISE IS GONE!!!!

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8fJWDs6yNiI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8fJWDs6yNiI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Hopefully you guys can give me a clue as to what it is. If not, i have the proof to supply to the dealer when i go for my oil change. Does the sound suggest that i should take it in now instead of waiting a couple of weeks before i reach the 15,000???

DiamondGCoupe 10-15-2008 09:14 AM

This is a seperate issue so I'll move this post into its own thread. This doesn't sound like the TSB either. You're saying it happens every few times you start your car? Could be misfiring, no SES light?

Wezbian 10-15-2008 10:46 AM

Finangle69 had this noise come and go too... but it was very rarely and after a hard run rather than at the start.

Let us know what it is if you take it to the dealer.

PROFLYER 10-15-2008 11:10 AM

damn bro, that sounds like a rod knock, but then it goes away....which isn't possible. I wonder if it's detonating because of a timing issue that resets itself when you restart the car. Either way, I'd get it in before it takes a dump on ya and you're stranded.

junyea 10-15-2008 11:37 AM

The noise comes in after i have used the A/C or Heater. This morning there was no noise. Yesterday, when i took the video, I had the heater on, on my way to work. When i got to park it that i when i heard the noise, and decided to record it. Then as you see on the video, if i turn the car off, and restart it, the noise is gone.....

Weird.

No SES light, no lights on at all.

shumby 10-15-2008 12:23 PM

Man that sounds bad.

junyea 10-15-2008 12:28 PM

Just made my appointment with Glendale Infiniti for Monday morning 10/20/08.

I will keep you posted.

nogoodname 10-15-2008 12:35 PM

that really sounds horrible !!!!!
you have a video of it as proof for the dealer to see, my dealer said if a sound comes just call right away and let them hear the sound through the phone or take a phone video. Once they hear something, they'll try to see what it is. If they don't hear anything, they don't do anything.

I blame Shumby for stuffy burrito's in your intake...lol

shumby 10-15-2008 12:46 PM

HAHA, I got the last word now.

nogoodname 10-15-2008 01:05 PM

DetroitG37Joe 10-15-2008 01:18 PM

I think I have heard a very very subtle form of this when me and my g/f parked in a parking lot and we were idling. I was running the latest Entourage and Heroes episodes from my iPod to the screen via Composite cable in the armrest. After using heat and/or A/C I could hear a slight slight chugging noise from the motor, less loud than this one. I was rotating between 15 minutes of car on, to 15 minutes of car off so as to not idle too long OR run the battery out from not having the motor on. When the slight chugging noise came, the restart of the car would make it go away.

shumby 10-15-2008 01:19 PM

+1 for parking with the old lady.

nogoodname 10-15-2008 01:21 PM

^^ what???

shumby 10-15-2008 01:26 PM

^^^ what you mean what? you never "parked" or watched the "submarine races" with your old lady?

nogoodname 10-15-2008 01:27 PM

what does parking have to do with this thread

shumby 10-15-2008 01:28 PM

NUtten but i bet he was getting lucky in his G with his old lady.

junyea 10-15-2008 01:29 PM

If anytime between now and my appointment on Monday, if i hear the noise I will drive to the dealer just to get a service person to document it for me. I don't live too far from there, so its not a big inconvenience.

I just want to make sure it gets taken care of.

bunluvsvw 10-15-2008 01:35 PM

You sure you dont have a train in the background, sounds like the subways on NYC. lol

nogoodname 10-15-2008 01:37 PM

LoL Im not gonna lie we do this from time to time before goin' into a restaurant for dinner. In fact many times we'll have a couple of cold ones sittin in the cupholders as well, lol, a few episodes and dinner is more than enough to burn that off - who doesn't mind a little cost cutting? It's very relaxing - and the Bose Studio on Wheels does a nice job for entertainment.

Nope this is different than the ticking noise.

speedracer g37 10-15-2008 08:53 PM

^i think this is an exaggerated version of the ticking vvel. i cant see it being anything else, especially if it can be reset by turning the car off.

shumby 10-15-2008 08:54 PM

I tought he was saying the ticking from the heater core caused by the excess sealent

speedracer g37 10-15-2008 09:39 PM

i don't know...i read the thread earlier when it was one page and now i'm speaking out my arse. but why would the sound from the heater core be intermittent?

shumby 10-15-2008 09:42 PM

i don't know but it is intermittent. I whent in on day made the guy come out to hear it because i kew when i got it it for the work it would not do it. And sure enought no noise when it when in for the appointment. but they knew it was bad.

TerribleONE453 10-15-2008 10:08 PM

DetroitG37Joe 10-15-2008 10:28 PM

I was idling and checking this out in my 2000 Lexus GS400 and when the A/C is on the motor makes a light chugging/knocking noise and goes away when you turn it off - it may be normal. However it's subtle as in my G as well and not seemingly as loud as the OP's YouTube video.

Weiboy718 10-16-2008 12:01 AM

is your rpm higher than normal when the noise is presented? my car has the same problem. noise goes away when you shut off your engine and turn back on. i'm gonna try to replicate the noise and take a drive to the dealer this week.

ppc 10-16-2008 12:36 AM

The sound almost reminds me of a starter that gets the bendix stuck, engaged to the flywheel. Its a commom problem with Toyotas but only with 100k miles or more on the clock. :confused2:

The noise while i have the A/C on is fine/normal. It remains the same as it was when i first bought the G. The problem/noise begins after i turn the A/C off. The noise heard in the video continues.

The RPM is not higher than normal when the noise is present. There is no difference in the driving when the noise is on.

When the noise comes on I am going and take it to the dealer, even if its before my Monday appointment. I just want a service person to take note of it.

Weiboy718 10-16-2008 12:48 AM

on my case the rpm is a bit higher than normal when the noise is presented. and same like you it doesn't affect the performance. weird! hopefully i could replicate the noise when i bring it in on saturday.

g37RN 10-16-2008 01:13 AM

sounds like a vlave train issue. or oil feed pump problem.

this isn't a ticking noise, it's more of a banging noise.
example of the sound: the subway system, a big rig truck or an old Volkswagen engine.

shumby 10-16-2008 11:28 AM

wow are you an audiophile? you so smrt.

I had the same exact noise... had to get the ECM reprogrammed with the TSB update:

Itb08-028: Noise From Bank 2 Vvel Actuator WITH the Ester oil change, and the noise is totally gone for me.

The first time they did it, they didnt change the oil to ester, and I could still hear the noise slightly. Took it back and they said they forgot to do the oil change with ester oil. They did the reprogram with Ester Oil the second time around, and all was fixed for me.

update: i couldn't replicate the noise today before i went to the dealer but the guy was cool and he seem's to know what noise i'm talking about so he told me to come back on monday and put me in a loaner.

junyea 10-19-2008 05:29 PM

Update: I had the noise yesterday so i drove it into Glendale Infiniti. I parked in the service area, and opened my hood. The service guy immediately said that the car needs Ester Oil. I told him i was there to prove the sound just in case monday morning I was unable to replicate the sound....

He said he has had a lot of G's come in for this same problem.

Skyline GT-R 10-19-2008 07:56 PM

Looked up...

Ester oil and this is what I came up with that closely fits your problem. Interesting

Weiboy718 10-21-2008 07:11 PM

i just got my car back from the dealer for the tsb ester oil. the engine does seem quieter but it's still too early to tell if it fix the problem!

junyea 10-21-2008 07:41 PM

same here. Had my service done yesterday. I have been using my a/c all day and the engine is quite....

I will keep you posted.

I got an FX45 as a loaner, man those things are sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!

but I do love my G more.....

Weiboy718 10-21-2008 07:48 PM

lucky you! i got a g35 sedan.

tx_g37 10-30-2008 11:04 PM

Junyea who was the service technician you talked too, cause i'll be taking mine in two weeks. I would rather talk to someone that has a clue of what the problem is. Im from Yuma, unfortunately we dont have an Infiniti dealership and i dont want to take it to the local Nissan Dealership.

can you repost the video? the url is broken.

tx_g37 11-14-2008 02:15 PM

I took my G to the dealer (Infiniti of Peoria) this past Friday for its first oil change. I told them about the engine noise and the brakes squeaking. Without any hesitation, the Service Consultant told me they would reset the ECM and fix the brakes. He told me that A LOT of concerned G37 owners have had the same engine problem. I asked him if they have replaced the regular oil with ESTER oil. He said no, but if I wanted the ESTER oil he could try to get it covered under the ECM reset. He said the only downfall to that would be that my future oil changes would be more expensive. Since I had read that some still had the noise after the ECM reset with reg oil, I decided to go with the ESTER oil. He then offered me a loaner @ $15, I know its close to nothing but when I bought my car in TX and they told me loaners were free (atleast at their dealer). I wanted to drive an FX but they only loaned G35 sedans:mad:!! Only 1k on the loaner but no premiun options. Approximately 4-5 hours later they give me a call and tell me they just finished washing my car so I can pick up the car before 6pm or just stay with the loaner and pick up my car the following day. I was close, so I went to the dealer hoping that anoying noise was gone! I turned on the car and I didnt hear it, I opened the hood to listen closely and still nothing. So I wiped the sweat off of my forehead and walked into the office expecting a big bill. The service guy started telling me what they did to the car, and then the big number, YOUR TOTAL IS GOING TO BE $15.00!!!!!! He told me he was able to get the Ester oil under the ECM reset. GREAT SERVICE!!! I know its only been a week but I havent heard that noise again. I've driven the car about 250-300 miles since the service.

shumby 11-14-2008 04:52 PM

$15 it is suposed to be free
