Why isn't the AT a 6 speed?
BMW has one, Lexus has one, and even the Ford Focus has one! So why not a fine car like the G?:dunno:
|
next year... they have to leave something to improve upon.
i'd actually be just fine with 5 gears if they geared 5th a bit lower. i'm usually at 3200rpms at 75mph. it's nice to have the torque, but 2500rpms would be a bit better. |
Then they'd have to make a 7MT! ;)
|
That's great, the AMG's are 7 speed AT's why not that? The question is one many peoples minds indeed. Think GTR.
|
I think that the was the AT on this car is aggressively tuned, they didn't want it competing too much with 6MT sales. You get extremely similar performance out of the 5AT to the 6MT. Also is saves cost if they can carry over technology from previous years.
i would have loved to have seen a 6AT or 7AT. I think that if they do it, it wont be until the 10, 11 model years though. |

I don't think they're working on adding gears! At least I haven't heard anything. |
I think the gearing in the AT is just fine. It's pretty aggressive in the low gears (2-3) when you get on it and stay on it. Also, I have been cruising at 80 and am getting over 24 mpg on the road. I'm driving another 450 mile R/T this afternoon through tomorrow and the mpg keeps climbing. I gotta slow down with my driving or I'll be trading this back in at Christmas.....:)

Im sure the 5AT works just fine, it's just that I am tired of my BMW loving co-workers making fun of my car to be because it's not a 6 speed auto. They say that "Infiniti is ripping you off with an old clunky gearbox". After driving a 6AT 335i... it's hard not to wonder why not a 6AT.

Just tell them BMW is the Ultimate Issues Machines. Tell them you'd rather trade the extra gear for less time spend in the service department like most BMW owners spend their valuable time at the service department :BOUNCE:. BMW has more issues than all Japanese auto makers combined :icon30:.

I love the way German cars feel and drive, but I need something as reliable as a toaster to commute in. As far as the tranny, I wish it had a sixth gear with a much taller overdrive. I'm a little surprised by how low the gearing is. Saying that, I realize I wasn't purchasing a Sentra, and 24 mpg on the highway for a 330 hp car with less than 1K miles on it is pretty amazing. It's not so much the mileage, it's the range on a tank of gas. This is where I was spoiled rotten by my TL. On my daily commute of 80 miles (round trip), I averaged over 30 mpg. That gave me a range of over 500 miles! My G37 has a range of about 430 miles before the low fuel light comes on. Now that is pretty impressive, but it means I can't go a full week without filling up the car. Big deal, it's just a change in behavior for me. Living out in the boonies, there isn't a gas station every block. And unless you live in hurricane country, you can't appreciate the value of a car with a long range on a tank of gas. After Katrina, sitting in line for an hour to fill-up was common. Everyone's experiences are different which drives their needs and concerns. |

Yep.. In addition even though the BMW has the extra gear, one review still said that the G37s AT "worked better".

Hey KAHBOOM, I finally had a chance today to drive a G37S 5AT. I drove it at Lynbrook Infiniti in New York queens. I loved that damn tranny! The G's manual and sport modes are FAR more aggressively tuned than the 335i's 6AT.
