I upgraded (or downgraded) to a 370Z last year from the G37 but anyway I just replaced the tranny oil in my 2010 370Z (~15k miles) with Redline MT85 from the stock stuff. Initially it felt stiffer and slightly more grindier but then on a road trip it really seemed to slicken up considerably. Now that the weather is cooler it's more difficult to engage second gear at low speeds. Not sure if the stock stuff would have been better in that case. No significant grinding but not much better than stock either. I really thought this stuff would do wonders as MT90 in my 1996 240SX transformed the gearbox long ago.

I just changed my tranny fluid to RedLine MT-85 this past Thursday and at first gears were notchy from the test drive so felt I had over-filled it since I was kinda in a rush and didn't let the excessive fluid drained out from the fill plug so the next day that's what I did. It worked wonders, now my gears feel nice and smooth like it should. From what I get from ppl getting notchy shifting etc. they maybe over-filling their tranny fluid so this can be one of the culprit ppl also can check for.

Not sure how is it possible to overfill the gearbox? I thought you just fill til oil starts to spill out the top of the trans and then cap it and you're done! Is that overfilling it?? Thanks for your info regarding this. If this is the case I may need to drain some out. It took just under 3 qts

Yes, if there's still fluid dripping out from the fill plug you can call that over-filling. The correct level should be letting ALL the excessive fluid drain out from the fill plug (should be no fluid dripping out). Like you I had capped it off when it was still dripping out so the notchyness went away once I did this.

It wouldnt hurt to double check yours to see if this could be your case as well. GL :biggthumpup:

Just how much excess we talking here? If it's a few oz, i doubt that would make any difference. If it's a pint or more, then sure. Maybe it's just a matter of the fluid heat cycling a few times...

Hi all,

I am new to this board and recently a happy owner of a 2009 G37s sedan. I am planning to change the transmission oil with MT-85. I noticed that the amount should be 3 quarts and 4 oz. Can i just fill in 3 quarts? I am trying to avoid opening a 4th bottle and it seems 4 oz is very minimal. Besides, filling 4oz wold overflow the transmission?

I'd suggest putting in the full amount. Do you really want to risk potential damage to your transmission to try to save $15???

As for me, I'm basing my conclusion off from personal experience, couldn't tell you how much extra fluid drained out from my fill-up tranny case but how ever much it was it did seem to cause the notchy-ness in my shifting because like many I felt a little extra fluid wouldn't hurt meh. It was an absolute mistake in my part ha.

Both my test drives were in the low-mid 50's temp and no longer than 10mins so don't think heat has anything to do in my situation.

After when I let all the excessive fluid drained out completely, I immediately felt the notchy-ness had went away so in my situation it worked out and knowing jabrother is using the same exact MT-85 sounds like he has the same issue that is all...

your gonna have to do this drain/refill anyway - so simply save the opened bottle till then. you bought an INFINITI and your being cheap on transmission fluid? if your that broke should have bought a Kia.

what are you gonna do when you find out the price of 18" tires? :eek: attempt to have yours re-treaded to save loot? lol

Since you have a 2009, I would check your VIN to see what capacity you will need. In FSM, the 2009 g37 sedans either have 2.93 liter or 2.83 liter (about 3.10 quarts or 2.99 quarts).

The FSM states VIN JNKCV61E69M303072 or below should to use 2.93 liters. VIN from JNKCV61E69M303073 and up should use 2.83 liter.

Not a problem. But please note what I stated assumed you had no 4WAS option. If you do have 4WAS, please refer to the attach PDF for the correct VINs.

4WAS is 4 Wheel Active Steering and not AWD (All Wheel Drive). 4WAS was an option that could of been added. Please see this thread to check if you have it or not: https://www.myg37.com/forums/g37-cou...-has-4was.html

As for the VIN, it is the whole VIN and not just the last 6 digits.

Thanks for the clarification and the link. I checked underneath my car and i do not have the 4ws package.

*Update*

Strange is that my VIN seems to fall into models with 4WAS. I checked the original invoice and I did not see 4WAS as an included option . To be safe, I will use 3 quarts and 4 oz.

Also, thanks again Vsiev. By checking if I had 4WAS, I noticed that there is a leak in my differential so I will call my dealer to get it fixed.
