can't get these stains off my wheels!!! HELP!

ok, so i've had these stains on my two right rims for about a month now. Nothing seems to get it off. I trip out because my left two are perfectly fine. I've tried scrubbing. I've used wheel cleaners and nothing seems to do the job. if you run your finger along the wheel you can't feel it. Any advice on what can else I can try?

that is very strange... never seen something like that

bboysteele Aug 19, 2008 03:44 AM

I hear that certain cleaners that you use on your rims can do this. The shop that repaired my rims told me never to buy that crap in the auto stores because it would do exactly what is in your pics to our stock rims. I am guessing it is the cleaner you might have used. Hopefully one of the detailers on here can answer or better yet provide a solution.

i have heard this as well.. ^ i just soap my rims very thoroughly and dry them like the car..

it's still weird as hell though cuz why would it only happen to the right side of my car?? Also, all I ever used was soap and water to wash my wheels until this happened, then I tried using other things without success

I'm afraid what your looking at isn't a stain, but absence of paint, exposing the black primer under it, you'll need to get the wheels refinished. This TSB doens't specifically list the G37 but I'm betting it applies.

Classification: Reference: Date:
WT02-003 ITB02-073 November 19, 2002
TITANIUM FINISH ALUMINUM WHEELS
APPLIED VEHICLES:
2003 G35 Coupe (CV35) – with 18x8JJ wheels
2003 M45 (Y34) – with 18x7.5JJ wheels
2003 Q45 (F50) – with 18x7.5JJ wheels

SERVICE INFORMATION
When cleaning titanium finish aluminum wheels:
ONLY use aluminum wheel cleaner

Do NOT use chrome or wire wheel cleaners as surface discoloration may occur (e.g., black stains or spots)

CLAIMS INFORMATION
Discoloration due to the use of an incorrect wheel cleaner is not a warrantable condition and warranty claims for
replacement of such discolored wheels will be denied.

Sorry to bring the bad news, but based on the pics, the clear coat on your wheels has been damaged by the acidity of the cleaning products likely combined with heat. I would contact a wheel repair professional in your area and have them repainted.

Good luck.

i am going to guess that you sprayed the wheel cleaner on all four wheels and then cleaned the drivers side first and rinsed it off. by the time you got to the passenger side, the acid had etched into the rims.

Some car wash's use wheel cleaner and they let it sit too long, also the dealer might have used wheel cleaner when your car was in for service

It will never come off, the wheels will need to be re-painted :o

Thats the only way you should wash the wheels.

I hate to give the bad news, but I had the same problem with my G35. The carwash used wheel cleaner and my wheels were like a zebra, but grey and black.

The only way to fix this is to re-paint the entire wheel.

i always watch the guy who hand washes my car.. he washes/dries each wheel 1 at a time.

also, ive told the dealer never to wash my car, and they never have.

XtatiC Aug 20, 2008 04:39 AM

i'm going to try to take it to the dealership.. they'll probably laught at me, but it's worth a shot. If they don't fix it, I'll probably powdercoat them or something.. **this sucks***
