ZahyMatar's '12 A54 G37x Sedan
Finally decided to start my own build thread... I had to fit in somehow! :icon17:
In September of 2015, I finally purchased my first car at the age of 20. After nearly a year of researching, I ended up purchasing a 2012 G37x Sedan in Vibrant Red. Purchased it with 35,000 miles on the odometer, 4 months later, it's at nearly 43,000. (Driving between NJ and NC) Car paid off as of August 27, 2016. Wheels/Suspension/Brakes
Intake/Exhaust
Exterior
Interior
Lighting (Parts purchased, awaiting install)
Planned Upgrades

Here she is sitting at the dealer the day I bought her. :thewave:

I ended up buying it in December. The install sucked, but as you can see, I was successful. 0/10 would not do again. :7: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...70d3f0c263.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...6cb613e3b5.jpg |

PS: I really appreciate your help with the wheel fitment. :) |
In for progress. Love VR sedans.
Those black chrome 19's are going to look great. Once installed, I see AWD Swift Springs in your future sooner than later. |
I've finally made some progress! Quite a big change. :icon17:
19x9 Black Chrome Vert wheels installed along wrapped in BFGoodrich G-Force Comp 2 A/S tires (245/40/19) and my GTR start button :D Now I really need to get some AWD Swifts springs and an Akebono BBK, preferably in burnt copper. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...76b78962fc.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...76808bab08.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...eb287cf93c.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...bce4e93774.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...6e9b162c23.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...7c23297116.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...9e5e67eac2.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...6ae49875b3.jpg |
Those rims look fantastic on your G, Z. Just the right amount of chrome too IMO as is right now with the wheels, window trim, headlights, grill and fog rings. Very proper so far. Nice work....

But thanks man! I thought the same about the chrome too, although I think I'm still going to black out the window trim. We'll see  |
Recommend an Intake before you tune (Takeda or Stillen G3). There are no plenum spacers. You can make an aftermarket ported OEM plenum (Z1 performance) or a VQ35HR plenum (M370). You could also PNP your lower plenum to match. I actually have a set of OEM upper and lower plenums for sale if you're interested. Camber kits would be a good idea so your alignment is perfect one you lower it. Coilovers would be ideal though. Fortune Auto 500 with Swift springs is my recommendation. If you are going to paint your headlight housings might as well do some other upgrades too (clear lens, Iron Man or Halo Rings, etc.). Carsmo knobs are a nice cheap upgrade. Illuminated door sills looks great too. Diode Dynamics interior LED kit is another cheap mod that is really nice.
I love those wheels. Chin Spoiler, drop, painted headlights will look really nice. 20 years old and you got this car and money for mods. Must be doing good, good for you!! |

Camber kits will also be considered once the car is lowered. I'm realllllllllllly leaning towards Swifts since they seem to be well respected on the AWD side of the forums. The Fortune coils with Swifts do look awesome though. When/if I choose to do my headlights, I'd probably just upgrade the lenses. Halo are meh to me right now, maybe they'll grow on me? (It's not BMW) My car came with illuminated door sills when I bought it :D Thanks for your response though, very helpful and will definitely look into these options. Appreciate the kind words. |
With the AWD Sedan, if your priority for lowing is aesthetics, then definitely go with Swift Springs, and only pursue camber kit(s) if necessary after the fact. Lots and lots of people here get away with only the lowering springs, and /done.
As for the BBK... sure, copper powdercoated Akebono calipers would look amazing against 14" slotted rotors, behind black-chrome 15-spoke rims. But honestly, the wheel choice here hides your brakes. With that black-chrome finish, and the number of spokes, the brakes are an afterthought. If I were you, that expensive BBK would be way down my list. You know what else hides your brakes? Taking all these new pictures in the freaking shadows. |

Wheels look great Zahy, and just paint your OEM calipers black, just use some brake cleaner, then wipe down w/ rubbing alcohol and put a few coats of VHT black caliper paint on those brakes. This will clean up the look, not draw unneeded attention to base floating calipers, and will blend well w/ your G.
Rochester gives good advice, if you drop on Swifts just keep your front camber the best you can since you have full toe adjustment, and just get a rear bolt kit to get your toe proper, then you'll have a mild camber tuck to have those wheels fit like a glove. You'll be extra happy w/ that setup! |

Would I get the rear bolt kit installed and then get everything adjusted when I get an alignment? Would it be wise to purchase the Swift springs, rear bolt kit, and hotchkis all together? Appreciate your input, blnewt. |

Camber represents tilt on the wheel. A little bit of negative camber helps the handling of the car, by increasing the size of the contact patch that results from body-roll in a turn. Another use of negative camber is to tuck the top of your wheel towards the car, which is a technique people use for aesthetic considerations while chasing a flush fitment. Too much negative camber, and you'll rip up the inside edges of your tires. Go look at any of the cars on http://www.stancenation.com. These people have money to burn on tires and destroyed suspensions, and value an exaggerated approach to proper fitment. Personally, I don't get it and think it looks asinine... but it's a hobby for these people.

The rear bolt is for toe adjustment that you need because of the drop, but can't get to with the OEM part. The bolt hole on the frame of the car is elongated to support adjustment, and the bolt is longer. Toe is a more critical component than camber to an alignment. It represents how level the wheel is parallel to straight-line direction. If toe is out of alignment, the wheel will wobble, whether you can see it or not. In any event, it will destroy your tires.

That's the full kit if you want to elongate your camber bolt slot & your toe bolt slot. It requires using a dremel tool to widen the slots. Sometimes you can get your toe in spec & still retain reasonable camber if you just use the toe bolt kit (only 2 bolts total, not 4). But having the camber bolts to fine tune your alignment is a plus.

With toe correction available, the alignment Tech will probably be able to match rear camber on each side. And with the mild drop, I suspect the AWD G on matching AWD Swift Springs will be somewhere between -1.5 to -2.0, which is entirely fine. It will wear well, and look good, IMO.
The other plus about Swift Springs on the AWD is that the floor-2-fender measurements are similar front to back, whereas the RWD G and matching RWD Swift Springs retain that droopy rear, stock configuration. Believe me, once you drop your car and tuck those wheels flush with the fender, you're going to absolutely love the way it looks, and you'll no longer feel like a complete idiot using words like drop, tuck and flush. :hsugh: |

So I decided to go with the Tanabe exhaust for my sedan after nearly a two month wait for the TopSpeed Pro. I think I'll be happy with the Tanabe by itself for the next few months until I pair it up with some HFC. Exhaust should be here the beginning of February. :)

With the help of my friends, I got my Tanabe exhaust and sway bars installed along with an oil change. :icon17: Took us around 3 hours to do everything, having air tools helped a lot with removing the end links. But other than that, everything went smoothly. The Tanabe looks great and I definitely notice a difference. It's very subtle and should become more prominent once it's broken in. Can't wait to try the sway bars out.

is your exhaust really quite unless your really getting into it? Cause I have cats, y pipe and the same same axle back you have and resonators still in place and it sounds quite, no drone but i really only hear it unless im flooring it or shifting myself and letting the gears redline. Thanks

That's really, really quiet.
There's a reason why people describe the Tanabe Medallion axle-back as close-to-OEM. Sure does look good, though. I'd call that a fair return for the price. |

I'd say it's slightly louder than stock. I'm excited for my HFC and possibly swapping out the resonators for some 12" vibrants. All in all, this will probably end up costing as much as the Stillen exhaust but that's okay, it'll be a somewhat unique setup.
Z1 Motorsports, huh? 300 cell count with support for the connecting bracket, for $388. As long as you don't trip a CEL on the O2 sensors, that seems like a pretty good buy. https://www.z1motorsports.com/images...Conveters2.jpg |

Absolutely. Once you replace your OEM cats for non-resonated high-flow cats, you're going to introduce a good amount of noise. Even more so if you use smaller resonators in the pipes.

That's really the only thing that worries me. I know the FI HFC have the extended O2 bungs, but Z1 seems like a reputable company so I'm willing to take the very slight risk of getting a CEL. Now the real debate is whether to DIY the HFC install (using a lift and air tools of course), or wait until I go back to Jersey and get them installed for $135. JDS Motoring does a lot of Z/G work and that price for a HFC install seems very reasonable. It's hard to trust shops near a military base since all they try to do is screw us out of our money. ($600 for Swift spring install LOL)
IMO $135 is extremely reasonable to forgo the hassle of the cat install. I paid quite a bit more but would've gladly forked over twice as much!!! :D Judging from the feedback from several members, it was not a pleasant experience. Sean |
I would do the $135 install in a heartbeat. I paid $260 to have mine done. Their a PITA to do yourself even with some buddies help....

Made a couple of calls today. Best quote I got was for $200 for Z1 HFC install. I'm perfectly fine with that as long as they don't break my O2 sensors :icon17: Looks like I'll be purchasing my Z1 HFC sometime in March!
Also had this one shop go on a rant how there's no such thing as "high flow" catalyic converters and how I'll need a tune along with O2 foulers. :dunno: |

I'll think about getting the Fast Intentions HFC. Don't really need them to be resonated. I just liked the Z1 HFC because of the 300 cell count and the mounting brackets. |
It's pretty hard to tell the difference between the tanabe vs stock in a video, imo.
But there is a big difference. Its a lower, deeper tone and its quite a bit louder. I also like the little crackle noises it makes sometimes. |
Finally ordered my Berk's HFC from ImportPartsPro! I'm so excited to get these things installed, found a G/Z speciality shop less than an hour away from me that only charges $100 for HFC install.
Also decided to hop on the debadge bandwagon. Still need to clean, polish and wax the area to get rid of the ghosting. I also need to figure out how to center the Fuji. Any tips would.be awesome. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.myg...add1b20b9a.jpg |

Ughhhh, so yesterday I took it upon myself to paint my engine cover metallic black, since I was bored of the OEM silver and I've always been a fan of how the IPL cover looked. I sanded, masked, primed and everything. Even did 4 coats of high temp paint. Waited about an hour after the final coat to peel off the masking tape. I peel off the tape and the tape took some of the paint off with it. Didn't seem to bad, went and bought a small paint brush to touch the area up. The wet paint dripped down onto the dry paint and dissolved it. Not only that, but the primer somehow seeped through the paper I used to mask the black plastic and the overspray wasn't coming off.
Now my original cover looks terrible, I don't even want to put it on my car. I'd buy an IPL cover but I only drive an automatic X sedan, not even a sport. I'm butthurt. On another note, my Berk's HFC from ImportPartsPro shipped today, and I'm scheduled to have my HFC, Swifts, SPC toe/camber bolts installed sometime next week. |
Aw, poor guy. Well, you get props for trying, and then owning up to failure.
Start over. Take your time, use lighter multiple coats, and let things dry completely. Use a razor blade lightly in the crease before ripping off the mask. Use Frog tape. And don't be so hard on yourself. I painted mine twice before I was happy with the results. Try again. |

The price difference between the regular cover and an IPL cover is $20. Very tempting, but I don't know. |

JK. I think the IPL cover's bad-***. If you like it who cares? We have coupe wheels and no one thinks we're driving coupes...or even mentions anything about it. Other than: nice wheels. I want to paint my OEM one, but I'm just not inspired. I can't find a color I like and I dislike painting enough that I keep putting it off. Lord knows that if want to do a mod on the G, I will. Just can't get in a good spot with it. Sean |

$186 shipped from InfinitiPartsUSA. The vibrant red spoiler was about $100 cheaper than any other color that was available. I'd check CarPartsCorner on eBay for a good deal.

Yeah I saw one in my color for about 100, just trying to figure out if that's the best deal I can find.

$100 is a great price for the spoiler! Follow blnewt's DIY install thread when/if you get it.

I went with CarPartsCorner myself. They had the A54 and I was off to the races. Good price. But it seems Vibrant Red is less expensive than the others. I know it's not a 3-step paint like the MW or MB, but also, I think there are fewer VR Gs around and the accessories specifically for them are languishing. Maybe an over production? I really don't know though...:dunno:

In that case, maybe I'll find an OEM front lip or sport bumper in VR for a reasonable price :icon17:

I didn't have as much luck with the front lip. I went with Grubbs Infiniti out of Texas. It was very reasonable, so reasonable that I don't remember how much I paid LOL. But I do know there was no tax for me (out of state).

Well, if you don't in the mean time, you will in August if you go to the meet. LOL Sean |

I'd love to make it to that meet in August but I'll be deployed by then. I hear ya. My G is like a magnet for MILFs when I go to Target. LOL. JK. Of course, I wish you the best on your deployment. (does your G need a foster dad in the mean time?) Sean |

Finally making some progress! Started my Swift spring install. Had to leave my car overnight because the hobby shop closes though. Will finish tomorrow with some more pictures!

Nice progress, going to look sweet when lowered.
That second pic was funny at first, thought there was some short creepy goth dude checking out your G, lol. |
Oh hey, that's right... Swift Springs with match your VR Sedan. That's kind of neat.
Wow, those rotors are hunks of rust, eh? |

Wow, those rotors are hunks of rust, eh? And they are unfortunately. If I upgrade rotors, I'm just gonna go all out though and get the BBK. And a second set of wheels with PSS since I'll be out of the military by then and actually have room for this stuff. |
Swift springs are finally installed! The car drives surprisingly well, feels better than OEM honestly. Gonna give the springs a week to settle and get an alignment on either Friday or Saturday.

Wow, what a difference! Very well done, Z.
You know, about the brakes... those 15 spoke OEM rims do a very effective job of hiding the brakes. And while the Akebono BBK looks heroic, the reality for daily driving is they perform and feel the same. In other words, don't worry about it. |

Looking very nice Z, should drop a bit more, look forward to more pics.
And John makes a good point, you picked the perfect wheel set for keeping those base brakes a secret :) |
Looks great man. I know you gotta be grinning from ear to ear.....
|
Too funny! I've got a red G as well and just got the same set of wheels. Yours looks great!

And newt and Roch are correct. They're great for occluding base brakes which work very well indeed. Sean |
Looks great brother!!!!! Keep up the great work man!

Thanks guys! I expected my alignment to be all out of whack, but the car is driving perfectly fine? Going in for an alignment this Friday after the springs settle for a bit. Oddly enough, the car rides much better now. Might just be a placebo, but I'm enjoying it. I expected to be feeling the road a lot more.
