I can't figure it out: Thicker xS Coupe Rear Sway Bar

Hey there,

(2012 G37 xS Coupe)

I can't determine conclusively through threads, or sellers if the xS Coupe rear sway is completely unique and can only be replaced w/ the Hotchkis setup. I don't need a new front I've determined (it is thick enough), but I will be getting end links for the front and rear.

But - the rear sway - I just can't figure it out. Is the xS Coupe rear sway swappable with any of these (or even a stock S Coupe)?

https://www.z1motorsports.com/sway-b...809.html?m=G37

Because they all say they wont fit the AWD Models.

But then I read through threads, and people are saying that the RWD S model (they are not specifying if sedan or coupe) is swappable with the AWD model (they not specifying if it's sedan or coupe).

I hope this question makes sense, I will try to simplify it more:

Will any of the aftermarket RWD (sedan, or coupe) Rear Sway bars fit the xS Coupe? Or, will a G37 S (coupe, or sedan) rear sway fit the xS Coupe? Are there any modifications or longer end links or different kind of bushing mounts that are needed? thank you!

All the rears are the same, even from the 370Z, which is what i am currently using.

The fronts are different between the X (AWD) and the RWD

My understanding is that the AWD rear sway bar is of smaller diameter on both the AWD coupe and sedan. This is likely setup as such to induce more understeer since AWDs are normally preferred in parts of the country with inclement weather. Recall that manufacturers (regardless of whether the car is FWD, AWD or RWD) dial in a little more understeer as its safer and easier to correct for compared to oversteer; for example, ease off the gas pedal and the understeer will reduce.

As such, there are many members that replace the AWD rear sway with one from a RWD. Good thread on the topic here: https://www.myg37.com/forums/brakes-...r-upgrade.html

As for the RWD Sport vs. RWD Journey sway bar differences, this is a heated topic as the outside diameter and replacement PNs for each are identical on Nissan's own parts sites. However, several third party sway bar providers have provided stiffness numbers for their sway bars compared to BOTH journey and sport OEM sways, showing differences. Unless someone wants to saw both in half to measure tube thickness, we likely will never know for sure.

I personally have driven several Journeys (albeit rental cars when travelling for work prior to COVID) and the suspension is quite a bit different from the RWD Sport I've owned for 10 years. Even in stock form, the RWD Sport model exhibits very little body roll compared to the Journey. That could be linked to the dampers and spring rates of the OEM Sport suspension? As such, I have never felt the need to change the sway bars since it's easy to induce some oversteer quickly if you need it, especially when the car is lowered, spaced and aligned to factory specs.

This is from another G37xS owner who upgraded the rear sway - "Yesterday I installed the rear OEM G37S coupe sway bar...swapping out my "pathetic" one which is only 17.7mm compared to 24.2mm." The OEM sport rear sway will fit and so will the NISMO 370z rear sway (IIRC they are the same diameter). The AWD front sway bars are likely what they mean by "won't fit AWD models" due to the unique bends. The rears will bolt right up, so might be worth buying a rear sway and trying that out first before buying an AWD specific front and rear set. Can always add a front bar later if you want to.
