Shift Knob : Help with Removing

Anyone took off their OEM shift knob?? if you did how did you do it?

UNV-IT46 10-19-2007 06:08 PM

if its like most oem knobs there should be a locking nut right under the bottom of the knob which once you remove the knob should just unscrew.

You may need a rubber strap wrench to grab the knob tightly enough to turn it without destroying it. They put blue loctite on it usually. Also do not put any torque on the shaft. (That doesn't sound right.)

Its actually the same exact shifter as what is on the V35...

Lift up the shift boot console (not the leather boot, but the whole plastic surrounding)

Put a set of vice grips on the shifter shaft
Put a towel over your stock shift knob and put a pair of pliers onto it
hold the shifter shaft in place with the vice grips and turn the pliers..

the upper boot cover can not be removed as there is a bolt holding it down into place...

Ill look at my fast system / service manual when I get to the office tomorrow...

I figured the center console dash would lift up the same...

either way, once that console is lifted up, then follow the steps..

What bolt are you talking about?

You do not remove the Leather Boot from the plastic console... You put your hand inside the leather boot and pull up on the plastic console...

there is a screw on the end of the boot i.e. cloest part to you if you were sitting in the car. It holds the whole plastic shift ring that the leather boot is attached too. You can get the whole ring up like you said by pulling but on one part it wont come up because there is a screw holding it down....

SLaPiNFuNK 11-06-2007 03:37 PM

oh... you dont want to pull up the ring.. you want to pull up the complete console...

Ill go do it on a car rite now...

hehe

ok its from a different spot.. but some concept...

in this picture below, I am holding one side... you want to hold BOTH sides... one with your left hand and then the oposite side with your right...

so do not pull up on just one side... but both sides...

pops up pretty easly...

ya i got that far no issues but it was still really tight because its attached to that black plastic piece under with a single screw I pried a little more and the whole lower metal concole came up which worked best....

Just need to get it high enough to grab the shifter shaft with some vice grips and then go to town on the shift knob...

Put a towel over it and then take some plyers to it holding the vice grips in place...
