Shift Knob : Help with Removing

Anyone took off their OEM shift knob?? if you did how did you do it?

UNV-IT46 10-19-2007 06:08 PM

if its like most oem knobs there should be a locking nut right under the bottom of the knob which once you remove the knob should just unscrew.

RedHerring 10-19-2007 10:13 PM

You may need a rubber strap wrench to grab the knob tightly enough to turn it without destroying it. They put blue loctite on it usually. Also do not put any torque on the shaft. (That doesn't sound right.)

ivory37 10-20-2007 09:34 AM

what knob you getting ? I kinda like the OEM one

Volk350z 10-25-2007 12:44 PM

putting on the ARC Titanium Knob..

SLaPiNFuNK 10-27-2007 07:06 PM

Its actually the same exact shifter as what is on the V35...

Lift up the shift boot console (not the leather boot, but the whole plastic surrounding)

Put a set of vice grips on the shifter shaft
Put a towel over your stock shift knob and put a pair of pliers onto it
hold the shifter shaft in place with the vice grips and turn the pliers..

the upper boot cover can not be removed as there is a bolt holding it down into place...

Ill look at my fast system / service manual when I get to the office tomorrow...

I figured the center console dash would lift up the same...

either way, once that console is lifted up, then follow the steps..

What bolt are you talking about?

You do not remove the Leather Boot from the plastic console... You put your hand inside the leather boot and pull up on the plastic console...

Attachment 168996

UNV-IT46 11-06-2007 03:35 PM

there is a screw on the end of the boot i.e. cloest part to you if you were sitting in the car. It holds the whole plastic shift ring that the leather boot is attached too. You can get the whole ring up like you said by pulling but on one part it wont come up because there is a screw holding it down....

SLaPiNFuNK 11-06-2007 03:37 PM

oh... you dont want to pull up the ring.. you want to pull up the complete console...

Ill go do it on a car rite now...

hehe

ok its from a different spot.. but some concept...

in this picture below, I am holding one side... you want to hold BOTH sides... one with your left hand and then the oposite side with your right...

so do not pull up on just one side... but both sides...

pops up pretty easly...

UNV-IT46 11-06-2007 03:50 PM

ya i got that far no issues but it was still really tight because its attached to that black plastic piece under with a single screw I pried a little more and the whole lower metal concole came up which worked best....

SLaPiNFuNK 11-06-2007 03:54 PM

Just need to get it high enough to grab the shifter shaft with some vice grips and then go to town on the shift knob...

Put a towel over it and then take some plyers to it holding the vice grips in place...

SLaPiNFuNK 11-06-2007 07:01 PM

Very nice!

They were on back order... They re-vised them... the finish looks nicer now IMHO...

yes the old design was nice also just the burnt look was not as bright. It was darker looking. Now the colors are very bright. I have 10 coming in tomorrow hopefuly... thursday i would say the latest

UNV-IT46 11-07-2007 11:38 PM

well i removed the knob per your instructions and it did not work so nice. It ****ed the hell out of the oem knob. And that was with a towel folded over twice on top of it....

SLaPiNFuNK 11-08-2007 05:46 PM

wow... you sure did butcher it...

Note... Its best to grab it by the top of the shift knob... The metal surround is not attached to the main part of the shift knob that is bolted down...

Even the 03-07 G35 Coupes / 350Z's / Sedans... most ended up butchering their OEM shift knobs oppon removal...

As you can see... its a pain to take out...

pain is not even close to the right word lol. I tried on the top first but because it was round it just kept slipping.

:-/

Ill mess with a G37 and see if i can figure out an easier way...

That was how we did it on all the other G's / Z's...

The G37 has the exact same shifter assembly as the older G35 / 350Z...

So if anyone is wondering... the B&M SHifters etc will still work in the CV36 :D

I was thinking about doing the C's short shifter but after adding my new knob i think it might be way to short then...

SLaPiNFuNK 11-08-2007 08:29 PM

C's isnt around any more?

The good shift knobs...

Rogue
B&M
350Evo (basicly a rogue)

STILLEN & NISSAN MOTORSPORTS have an adjustable short shifter that isnt really wonderful... its a rattle box... They sell the same manufacturer...

Man, after seeing your ARC knob in there, it sits LOW...

you can still get the C's shafts. They are hard to find but you can get some. I dont think they made a g35 or 350 one but not 100% sure on that. I saw the nismo adjustable one your talking about. seems like a good idea but i didnt see how secure it would be since you can adjust it. Ya it sits really low which is why i am thinking about not doing the short shifter also. Althought the B&M's dont really make it much short they just make the throws shorter. My father has one installed on his 911 TTs. and while it droped the height maybe an inch it greatly reduced the throw...

SLaPiNFuNK 11-08-2007 11:31 PM

Its not NISMO... its NISSAN MOTORSPORTS which is different from NISMO Japan...

The shift knob already sits low enough,, you dont want it lower, you want shorter throws...

If anything, a taller shifter with shorter throw would be better... when proper track driving with both hands on the wheel, you want the least amount of travel between the wheel and the shifter...

that thats another subject...

agreed thats what i was stating above is that i dont really want the shaft shorter at this point i want the throws shorter which is why the B&M i a good option. as far as who makes the adjustable one. Here is the information provided to me on the Nismo wholesale account

"NISMO adjustable short shifter kit for the 350Z and G35. It has 4 positions at +20%, 0%, -20%, and -40%. It's easily adjustable while at a stop light and very simple to install"

It is NOT NISMO though... it is NISSAN MOTORSPORTS... different company's... not made in japan.. Made by a guy who sold them to MOSSY NISSAN, STILLEN and NISSAN MOTORSPORTS, same product...

I loaned the guy a transmission to use to build it off of...

So has anyone been able to take off the stock shifter w/o messing up the OEM knob? If so, any suggestions? I have a Trust shift knob coming in the mail. :)

TerribleONE453 02-29-2008 08:16 PM

Damn that sits low... looks nice though

TerribleONE453 03-01-2008 01:49 AM

Yea i think its a little to high as well... I would have to feel how it is. Cant judge in pictures

SPOHN 03-07-2008 10:03 PM

Anyone else had issues with there removal? Going to try tomorrow. The time I did it on my Z seemed to be pretty simple. Seems to be the same as the others mentioned.

Last time used vice grips and rag on the knob with an adjustable wrench to twist of. It was easy that time around. Just looking for any updates.

TXG37S 03-10-2008 02:44 PM

There are instructions and diagrams on how to remove the shift knob in the Service Manual. It starts on page 18 of the tm section (Transaxle & transmission).
  1. Remove shift knob with the following procedure.
  2. Release metal clips on console finisher assembly.
  3. Lift console finisher assembly and then set a suitable pliers to control lever assembly. CAUTION: Put waste cloth between a suitable pliers and control lever assembly to avoid damaging control lever assembly.
  4. Set a suitable pliers to shift knob. (the picture shows two sets of pliers here) CAUTION: Put waste cloth between a suitable pliers and shift know to avoid damaging shift knob.
  5. Keeping control lever assembly in place with a suitable pliers, loosen shift knob with pliers. NOTE: Remove shift knob from control lever assembly keeping a suitable pliers in place because a certain power to turn shift knob is still necessary even after adhesive is peeled.
  6. Remove shift knob from control lever assembly.
