Is it worth it? Hmmmm? Well, Lets just say I think so!;)

Include pictures of the shifters if you can although I'd imagine behind the grill and over the license plate to be the best location if not only.

I was refering to the 100 other reasons besides speeding a LEO may pull you over. I'd suggest investigating this further on the Escort forum and get some first hand experience from Virginia 9500ci owners if there are any brave souls.

It would suck if you find yourself getting pulled over not for speeding but because the LEO couldn't get a laser lock. Once pulled over the visable shifters grant probable cause for an internal search and confirmation of an illegal radar/laser protection system resulting in an order to remove and fine to boot. I have a feeling in VA anyway the best defense will be cruise control speedlimit+5.

True, it's a shame Escorts don't have this feature, alas your left with the logic of going with the advantages of the many features, versus the advantage of the few or in this case the one feature. Live long and don't let the cities camera systems prosper.

It depends what you're looking for and what you're willing to pay. Gee, sure for $1200-1500 you can get he Escort with all the bells and whistles. If you're looking to beat the speed traps then all the best.

The V1 is the best detector out there for accuracy and performance. I don't have it to speed or attempt to beat speed traps, but rather to remind me to be aware of my speed should I be on an open highway cruising at 10 MPH over the limit.

FWIW, one factor is the quality of the unit. My V1 picks up RF leakage from other brands - I can see the other units in front or beside me at a stop light.

I don't know about Virginia. I do know about the western states where I have been using this system.

The whole point of the control panel being at your finger tips is to be able to shut the shifting feature down once you have reduced your speed to the limit so the Leo "can" get a read. I have been hit both ways. It is always kind of amusing to see the Leo hit you, Go to another car because he couldn't get a read and then come back to you. By that time you should be able to do what you need to do! There have been a few times where I have been hit with no time to shut the system down. I definitely got the stink eye from the LEO.

As I have stated before, I do not use the system to break the law, But merely as a tool to stay out of trouble! I normally cruise at 5-10 over. I use my system for two reasons. The first being to see them before they see me and the second to stay out of trouble when I do a little spirited driving. This is still not a fool proof system as you always need to keep your eyes open and beware of "pacers". If you encounter aircraft or instant on radar, You are pretty much toast. Another great feature of the system is that it keeps you aware of red light and speed cameras and gives you distance as you approach those cameras. It also will let you know the light is red. When you get a speed alert, It tells you on the display how fast you are traveling.

Front shifters are in the grill on both sides of the Infiniti emblem. Rear shifter is mounted to the license plate.

I installed a 9500Ci about a year ago and I wouldn't want to be without it! I have a couple pics in the "my garage" under my profile. You can see the shifters in the lower grill (only when then light is right like in that pic). The radar detector is behind the upper grill under the Infiniti logo (you can't see that one).

Inside the cabin, the display unit and LED are on top of my steering wheel stack in the middle. I just velcroed it on top just in case I need to hide that. The control unit (the buttons) is next to the parking brake. The GPS is in the top/center of my dash...it fits perfectly since it is the same color as the dash and no one has ever noticed it even tho it's in plain view. :D

All of the cables meet under my seat since I wanted easier access to it

Agree, Apples to Apples comparison for the V1 would be the 9500ix available in the same price area. As far as V1 being best, guess again. It's apparent in this article why the escorts don't offer directionalization, it leads to excessive falses from building reflection. If that's not enough, consider there's a whole range of speed hazards the V1 doesn't even see, there really is no comparison to the 9500ix either.

So far, I'm narrowing my decision down to these, since again, I'm in the great state of Virginia.

Passport SR7
Passport Qi45
Passport 9500ci

The Ci is the best choice, but it's pricey. I haven't gotten enough reviews on the Qi45 to justify buying it, the SR7 is good, but not as concealed as the Qi45.

The Qi45 I can hide very well. I'd like to get the laser shifters, but those things are entirely too obvious in the grill. If I could hide them behind the grill, that would be ideal.

Decisions Decisions...

Yes, the 8500 works almost all of the time. I even recently talked to one of the company reps and was told there is almost no difference in the technology police are using today as opposed to 5 years ago. For like $70 you can also upgrade older models as well.

No installation is required but I hard wired mine so the wire comes out at the top of the windshield. It looks good with no wire coming from the cigarette lighter and it is hard to see from the outside. You can also go from the rear view mirror which works good, too as others have mentioned.

Where do you mount it?

AvosG37 05-23-2010 05:01 AM

V1 or other radars under the mirror, do u take it down when the cop is next to u at red light or something? cuz its illegal :/ .

In the US radar detectors are only illegal in VA and DC.

I may as well add that, Where the controls are mounted, They are not visible from the drivers window unless you stick your head in. From the passenger side, The instrument pod blocks the view. I played around with different locations and found this to my liking without having to cut into anything.
