Plasti-Dip Stock Rims... Yay or Nay?

Hi all -

What are you thoughts on using Plasti Dip on the stock rims? I currently have a black g37x coupe - was thinking of doing that instead of buying new set of rims. Have some questions though...

1) Do i have to remove the tires or can I just cover the calipers/rotors?
2) How many Plasti-Dip cans do i need to buy to cover the 4 rims?
3) Does rain/snow affect it? does it easily rub off?
4) What if I want to remove it- how easy is it to do that?
5) any other tips?

Thanks!

I don't care for it personally but I've seen some guys mix some gloss and metallic to the matte dip color to produce some impressive affects. That said, they definitely knew what they were doing.

1)dipyourcar.com has tutorials for both
2)1-2 cans pending how many coats you want
3) It's pretty tough..wont rub off per se but will come off if it's nicked by something
hard enough.
4)Peels off if applied correctly. Even coats and no thin spots or over spray. Comes off pretty
easily regardless.
5)I wouldn't recommend it with a black car....the matte black against the Obsidian looks
tacky and cheapens the look of the car IMO.

Look at some pictures online and see if there's a color you like. Then, I'd say paint with a Duplicolor product or something similar until you find a set of rims you'd like to upgrade to. Personally, I like bronze rims against a black paint job.

hmm bronze colour would look nice as well! seems like a lot of work though, would need to plasti-dip it black first and then use some copper metalizer to finish it off.

I say nay. A good powder coat or paint job usually runs $50-$100 per wheel. At that point the plastidip kit isn't that far off (once you start adding pearl, metal flake and all that fancy stuff). The only real reason to go with plastidip is if you want to change the color of your wheels often and need to peel it off. Just my opinion though.

if you must plastidip....make sure you get one of the easy to hold and spray triggers to go on top of the spray can. A lot easier to spray for detailed work like rims. And you wont loose feeling in your finger

I'd probably go with regaule automotive spray paint the plastidip doesnt hold up too well

Save money, upgrade to wheels you want. No point in glorifying the 17's

there are a lot of youtube videos that answer all of these questions....

I went and looked at a car today which looked great in the online dealer photos. When I got there, the trim had been plastidipped along with the wheels. It looked cheap in person. It looked fake. I wouldn't do it. I didn't buy the car as a result.

if it's a good price don't let it go because of dipped wheels, if it was done right it's easy to remove. if not enough layers it's annoying but can still be removed

Wasn't a good price and the plasti dip wasn't done correctly. Looked rather cheap and was starting to flake at some of the edges on the trim. You could tell what it was from five feet away. It was just a sign that the car, overall, wasn't what I was looking for. Brakes were shot too. I know I can just have everything done correctly but it shows me the owner didn't care much or have the money to do it correctly. Makes me wonder what else was or wasn't done to the vehicle.

Yea, I find when the care for appearance starts to deteriorate so does everything else. Tells me they don't care how it looks and if it's ugly on the outside the inside it probably twice as bad.

Out of curiosity, what was the vehicle?

Audi RS5.
