why 19 inch tires, seriously cost is outrageous

Someone please tell me my someone thought it would be a good idea to put 19 inch tires on the G37S? Have you see what 19 inch 200 TW tires actually cost?

blnewt 08-14-2016 08:39 PM

I know, 19s for some odd reason cost a lot more than 18s and even a fair amount more than 20s.
19s strike a good balance for looks and performance, not as rough as 20s but make more of a statement than 18s.
I'm glad I went back to 18s FWIW :)

nethole 08-14-2016 08:44 PM

so which 18s did you pick? I'm looking for RE71Rs (200 TW is the goal). But, am interested in pick a set that will have similar end diameters, so that effective/actual MPH will be correct with spedometer, and top end speed (in 2nd gear) will be the same. I believe the stock 19s on the G37S have 27 inch diameter.

I went with Kumho Ecsta Sport LE, they are Max Performance Summers w/ a 260 TW rating. I'm running 245/45/18 (26.7" diameter), the 245/40/19s (rear on 19" coupe wheels) are 26.8". My 18s are 18x9.5 and I have room to run 255/40.

If you were to get new 18" wheels and run those 245/45s your mph would only be off by a scant 0.13%

Might look into the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo, Tirerack has them after rebate for $567, and w/ your 19x8.5/9" stagger you can run 245/40s all around without issue.

Slightly used sets can be had for fairly cheap if you look around...set of 255/35 and 285/35 PSS cost me $250 with 90% tread

i bought some achilles tires off amazon. $88 each free shipping. not familiar name brand but do the job well

19s look great on the G and I really don't think pricing is that outrageous.

For example, I previously had 245/45/18s and most tires ran around $150-220 a tire versus the 245/45/19s I have now that run 170-230.

Nankangs are great budget tires too

nethole 08-16-2016 09:32 AM

Read the original post, TW 200 tires. not budget tires. TW 200 tires. These aren't tires that are supposed to 'look good'. These are tires that are suitable for competition (aka ARE GOOD).

Too bad the tread wear rating standard isn't standardized. There is no single reference tire against which all others are measured.

bPChaos 08-22-2016 09:03 PM

This is approximately what I'm looking for - a set of trackday tires that fall into the 200 and below TW rating.

My wheels are 18in, but for our size (26.7 inch total overall height), there's really only a few choices depending on what width you want, in a rough set of sizes. You might have to drop down to 18s for a wider selection.

In a 265 or 275/40/r18, you have the Hankook RS3s, Nitto NT05, Federal RS-RR, and if you want to go a little crazy, the Advan AD08s and Pirelli Trofeo Rs also come in these sizes.

I'll do a little digging to find some 19s, but it's gonna be limited as you already know.

Might Check Toyo Proxes R1R and R888 too, might have to go down a bit in diameter (but will give you a bit better low end)

So this thread is about someone wanting to buy high performance brand name tires but don't wanna pay the price for it?

nethole 08-23-2016 10:55 AM

No, the thread is about the issue that 19 inch tires have a BIG cost differential over the same TW 18 inch tires. I'm quite happy some folks started to post 18inch options above. While there is a cost to purchasing 'extra wheels', One set of tire changes with 18inch and it pays for the wheels versus the additional cost of the 19inch (performance brand name tires)

saywat? 08-23-2016 01:11 PM

Wats the price difference for 18 vs 19 for the exact same tire? 19s run about $200 a piece for good ones. I didn't think that was bad plus u guys are lucky and get free shipping
