Upgrading 18's to 20's differences
 

Planning on upgrading the stock 18's on my black 2010 x Coupe to the new VF Vossen Series in gold! I've had my eye on these wheels for a while now, but wanted to know how different the car will handle after the upgrade. The tires that I'm looking at are 245/35/20.

If anyone has done a similar upgrade before or anyone that's running the same sized tires let me know if there are any problems that I should look out for!

What are the width and offsets of the wheels? 245 would be stretched on say a 10.5" wheel but should fit nicely on a 9.5" or so.

I would use a calculator like the one I linked below to get as close to the 18" wheel + stock tire size (wheel + tire height) or else you'll put extra strain on your brakes and the odometer/speedometer won't be as accurate.

Overall the car should handle really well assuming you get good tires although it won't be as smooth/comfortable. Post some pictures once you have them on and watch for potholes!

Going from 18s to 20s will result in a much firmer ride overall (which I happen to prefer). You'll feel road imperfections and bumps much more w/ 20s. Also 20s on stock height can look a bit off, if you don't plan on lowering I'd go w/ 19s.

Thanks for the advice guys, not planning on lowering the car just yet. But I'm pretty sure once I get the wheels on I may change my mind.

As for the size of the wheels I'm looking at the 20 x 9. So with the tires they should fit comfortably.

I recently went from 18s to 20s and I could feel some vibration on the steering wheel when going 60+ mph. It was scary. After getting some hub rings, re-balanced my wheels, and got an alignment done. The vibration was reduced and can only be felt sometimes.
I believe this is just the increased road feedback, but I am not sure.
Other than that, the car handles way better and feels much firmer. I am very pleased.

You're saying the car handles better with 20's? :confused2: I'm assuming because of upgraded tires, no?

I went from stock 18s on my sedan sport to vossen cv7 20s dropped on Eibachs.

20x9 +32 on 255/35/20 and 20x10.5 on 285/30/20

no issues, no vibration, no problems

i have a white 2010 x coupe as well, i got the vossen cvt's last month... i went with a staggered setup, because i love the deep concave in the back. There was no issues at all with installing these in the x coupe. fronts are 20x9 with a 245/35/20 tire, backs are 20x10.5 with a 285/30/20 tire, i put on michelin pilot super sports. I have upsized the wheels on all my vehicles, and they all act the same after you do, they will follow tracks in the road more, the handling sharpens up alot, and you get alot more feedback from the road.

Probably because I went from no tread left to full tread. The car corners better w/ less tire slipping.

I went from my stockers with some winter tires to 20 inch Vossen CV1's stretched tires with stock ride height. I must say after about 5000k miles i think i will go back to stock and keep my Z for the harsher ride. 20's seem to transfer much more road noise, it does track and does not absorb pot holes as well. Of course the horrible winter ravaged roads in the Northeast don't help.

But god do they look incredible.

Yep, almost every time I see wheels on a G I like they are 20s. Don't get me wrong, a lot of great looking 19s, but they always look like they need to be a bit bigger.

I was anti anything bigger than 19s for awhile, but the G pulls off 20s easily.

With the bigger wheels/tires, you will first notice that steering is more pronounced because the wheels will be tracking/grabbing the contours and lines of the road more.

Just make sure that the 20s either weigh the same or less than the wheels you are replacing. Heavy 20s turn the car into a slug. Not to mention the added wear and tear on the car because of the heavy large wheels.
