Square tires on stock staggered wheels

08 G37S 6MT. No handling mods, just intake and catback. Daily driver (15k+/yr), and plan on mild autox.

Running a square tire setup is a common way to dial out understeer. From searching online, many people have done this on cars other than the RWD G37s. I'm not counting people with X models for obvious reasons.

Has anyone on this forum tried running a square tire setup on the stock staggered G37s 19" wheels?

I'm considering going either square 245 or 255. The rear 9" wide wheels will obviously be fine with either size. The front 8.5" is what I'm wondering however. On other cars, people run as wide as 265 on 8.5" wheels, but I'm not sure at which width I'll see diminishing returns with grip/responsiveness. I know MANY people run the 245/275 setup on stock 19s, but I'm wondering what a 245 or 255 square setup will do for handling. If I do end up with a 255 square, will there be any rubbing up front? I don't plan to run spacers.

Any ideas? Maybe someone has tried square tires on the RWD G37?

I can confirm that 255 will definitely not rub in the front, I have them on 9.5" wide wheels and I'm moderately lowered and I don't rub at all. I can't tell you about the square setup on this car because I don't have it. I do have an older FWD car with a square setup on staggered wheel sizes. I don't notice any particular affect on handling that I can tell.

I also had a square setup on my 18" staggered OEM sedan wheels and everything was fine, could hardly notice the difference in the sidewall.

How did the handling feel? What was the tire width?

I know that 255 tires 'in general' fit up front no problem, with correct offset - so there are really three questions here.

1) Do 255 tires rub if installed on stock wheels, without spacers?
2) How do 255 tires feel on the front wheels, handling wise? Mushy or fine?
3) Does a square tire setup really reduce understeer to a noticeable degree on our cars? I don't see why our cars would be any different, but always good to hear first hand experience.

The OEM 18" sedan wheels are 7.5/8.5" set, so the stagger is bigger than the coupes 8.5/9". the OEM 18s are 225/245 and I settled in between on 235s (that's because there was a blowout on that particular size at Discount tire). With just a 1/2" stagger you shouldn't notice much difference running 255s square, the 255 diameter is a bit off compared to the 245 but other than that you shouldn't notice much difference.

I have an X and just installed today 245/40/19 Michelins at all four corners on stock 8.5 inch rims. No where near rubbing, but of course it's an X which sits higher anyway. Eibachs and 10 mm spacers go on next and I am confident that there will be no issue.

I am going to run similar...thinking of 255's square on 10" wheels. Just trying to figure out the offset. Glad to know they wont rub in the front

Has anyone pulled the trigger on a square set up? I see most go staggered. I'd be wanting to do Square but would like a 255/19 tire.

Unsure of the aspect and rim width/choice at this point. I'd like to see example pics if anyone has them, please..

A 255/40/19 would be the closest diameter to OEM and the recommended rim width range is 8.5to10" so a 9" +40 running 255/40/19s would be a good fit on your XS Sedan IMO.

245\40\19 is actually the size that is closest to oem.

^ yeah, I would want a wider width than 245. I don't know the rim width, likely 9.5 I would guess as I want a concave mesh style.

I looked at 10" wheels and 255/40 (I think) all around was the closest to the actual specs and will not throw the speedo off too far. That's what I am going to run when I get to that point

Anyone see any problem whatsoever with a square setup 245/40/19 on IPL wheels? I want to get the Michelin A/S3 but didn't want to have different speed ratings on the front and back with the A/S3 tires available for the staggered setup. I also don't want to go with 245 front and 275 in the rears. Thanks.
