tirerack.com winter tires for boston

QUESTION:

my number one priority for purchasing dedicated winter tires is making it through the semi-harsh boston winter. second is looks. with that being said.. should i go with 18" or 19" rims? or is it all about looks.. or will one size perform better than the other in snow?

I've never purchased tires/rims.. tirerack lists cheaper rims as painted while others are not. should i stay away from anything in particular?

this is what i've come up with from tire rack.. let me know if i should re-think my purchase. total cost approx: $1,554.00

tires
225/50HR18 Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 Blackwall
for 2008 Infiniti G37 Sport Model

rims
18x8 Sport Edition A7 Silver Painted
for 2008 Infiniti G37 Sport Model

I think that for winter tires it is always best to go down one size, so I would go with the 18" tire package, at least that is the size I plan on ordering. I like the wheels you chose, I think the ones I want to get are similar to those.

Boston merlin what were the cheepest set of rims thay had that would fit? And i do not care about looks.

I don't think 18" fit on a 6MT.

i dont think www.thetirerack.com agrees with you... and from what i've heard.. they are extremely reliable. if anyone else cares to debate this i'm open to discuss. i just want winter tires.. and tirerack says they'll fit the 6mt g37 sport.

Thats the exact same setup I'm going with Merlin. But the hills in Worcester can make you cringe when you see snow on them. I just want to see what it looks like with the wheels on the car. Buit for some reason I can't use that option for these particular set of rims.

Shumby I'm sure the 18x8 Sport Edition A7 are the cheapest rims you can get that will fit with the G37S.

the rims/wheels i listed above were the cheapest they offered. just go to www.tirerack.com, select your exact model of g37, select winter tire and wheel package.

I'm going to agree with this... although I don't have any data to back up my opinion. There's not much room at all around those big-*** brakes on our S cars. I'm not sure what TireRack's return policy is if the rims don't fit your car, but I'd look into that first, considering return-shipping 4 wheels and tires would cost a ton.

I do like the look of the wheels though, and agree in principle that dropping one size for the winter is a good idea.

Also, +1 for living in Texas and being able to drive safely on summer tires for 364 days per year.

Haha BM, I just found this thread but by coincidence I ordered this exact same wheel/tire package from tirerack yesterday. Hopefully they will get here to Canada before the snow starts.

I did a ton of research before I committed to these. So regarding fitment, I think all us sport owners have the same concern. I nailed that into that head of the tirerack rep I talked to. Tirerack had a G37S brought into their shop for test fitment before it even came on sale. They only list the tires/wheels that will guarantee safe fitment from what they have actually tried. I asked about a return/refund policy and they said they would pay for the expense of shipping the wheels/rims back themselves with a refund. As Tirerack has been around for almost 30 years, I feel I can trust them if they stand behind a product.

The Sport Edition A7's are the cheapest 18" wheel that will fit this car, I went with those and 225/50/18 all around. Skinnier is always best to cut through snow and slush, having a larger contact patch in winter just hurts you more. I personally don't like the look of the A7's but in the winter who cares, they are just going to get messed up anyways.

Let us know what you decide on.

If you get the right rims it's not a problem...

I ordered my winter setup today from Tirerack. I went with the 18' Blizzak with the ASA JH3 wheels.

bostonmerlin 10-24-2007 04:50 PM

I placed the order for a7 rims with blizzak tires (exactly as shown in my orig post).. as well as four tire covers from tirerack. will pick up a decent floor jack i can roll under the car for a quick lift this weekend.

... BRING ON THE SNOW! :)

How accurate is Tirerack's online wizard?? A few things that baffle me (in particular for the G37S):

- the winter tire selection only shows the blizzaks in 225/50-18. But for the G35 (also on 18" rims), it recommends a staggered setup of 225/45-18 + 245/45-18, giving it more options (basically blizzaks and the m3 sports)

- Clicking on the sport Ed A7's, the offset listed for the wheel is +35mm? Same offset is displayed when choosing this rim for the g35, and we know this wont work (my understanding is the g37s needs +43mm)..

any insight?

I need to get a floor jack too, anyone know where I can get one that is low enough to get under the G37.

bump.. have any of you guys that ordered winter rims from tirerack actually received them yet?
