Grinding/Vibrating noise, more noticeable at higher speeds

Hello everyone. Hopefully I am entering this in the right forum area.

I have a 2010 G37x 4D, w/ 100k miles

I recently noticed some pretty pronounced grinding/vibrating/humming from my car while I drive, particularly faster on the highway. It's really snowy here at the moment, so for a few days I was hoping it would just go away on its own, but it didn't.

I took it to my mechanic (not an Infiniti dealer) this morning, and their diagnosis is that the transfer case is going bad. The cost of fixing this is almost $2,000.

I apologize for not having any sound/video clips, I tried to record the sound while I was driving and you weren't able to hear it unfortunately.

What are your thoughts on this? I think I'm going take it to another mechanic to see what they think about it? I love my car, and wouldn't mind spending the money to keep it maintained well, but I also don't want to do this on a whim just because they said that's what they think the problem is.

Thanks in advance.
Nick

You're off to a good start seeking a second opinion, that's always a good idea...

regarding the cost that does seem high but I don't really remember how involved the labour is with it...I'm assuming that includes the cost of the transfer case, try sourcing a used on on ebay or from a wrecker, they are pretty common cars and used parts are way cheaper than new ones...

Rebro joint prop shaft. There should be a TSB on it. Its common with X models., ITB11-019. Just a possibility and something to check. Grinding would seem like bearings. A second opinion from another mechanic is a good idea too.
