Challenging intersections

Would you know which lane you needed to be in.... to go straight, or to turn?

Not sure about that one... It's out by Madison, WI. Here's one closer to home, Des Plaines, IL.

The one in the OP is very well marked as far as which lane one should be in depending on direction they intend to go. This one is not as well marked and quite confusing. For example, consider you're approaching from the southwest (7 oclock position), and intend to go north (12oclock). Which lane should you be in? I'd say the outside, but it appears the inside can also go east (3 oclock). Nickname for this intersection is suicide circle.

Oh God, I hate that round about in Des Plaines, IL. For some reason, my google map likes to go through there when on Golf Rd. Almost got hit by some idiot drivers here.

It is not so much that it is hard. It really isn't. What is hard is dealing with drivers who don't merge right or feels they own the road. For example, turning out of the circle from the inner lane without looking at their corners....

We Have A Rotary Like this around where I live not as big (fresh pond rotary) for those Bostonians and It use to be you could exit the rotary(or continue Around it) in all lanes they just recently switched it To the outer most lane you need to exit the rotary and to continue in it you need to stay in the inner lane. Seems to cause more confusing cause now people are still doing what they use to do but now it is against traffic rules so it causes more problems.

I don't think either of those are particularly challenging, but then again, 87% of my fellow motorists are at best chatting on the phone, at worst texting or facetiming while eating a cheeseburger, drinking a big gulp, and yelling at the kids.

We had a round-a-bout nearby that started with inside/outside lanes turn lanes. Lasted about a month before there were so many accidents that the repainted it for one lane.

Look at how many accidents happen on I65 in Indiana. I bet that in part contributes to it. Driving in a straight line for long distances leads to highway hypnosis.

I haven't been through the des plaines traffic circle in some time. Best I can recall, it seemed safest using the inside lane.

this is the only real problem with roundabouts, they are usually really well marked and prettily logically laid out.

that being said ever since I was kid and have seen a roundabout I can't stop from thinking to myself "Look kids Big Ben!" ...cracks me up every time.
