Modding a high mileage G that's new to me
Hey guys how’s it going, I’m new to the G family and just picked up a 2012 g37x about 6 months ago. I wanted to pay fully in cash so I settled for a higher mileage car with the benefit of no car payment. As it sits now I have 123k on it. As far as I can tell the previous owner took good care of it and I’ve had no problems. Do you think it’s still a good idea to mod it? I really want to do wheels, drop, and potentially an exhaust in the future. Also are lowering springs out of the question? Should I wait until I can fully afford coil overs? I’m a noob when it comes to this stuff so I hope to learn more from this forum and learn to do some stuff myself. Any advice is appreciated, thanks guys. |
123K miles is not crazy on the this car to start modding...if you are considering coilovers, I'd wait to do that over the springs as your car will probably need new shocks/struts at your mileage anyways...exhaust and wheels are not a big deal either...again at your mileage you may want to replace all or some of the exhaust as a maintenance item at some point anyways depending on the condition of it... enjoy the new ride

Welcome. Tons of info all over the Sedan/Coupe sub-forum. I'd start there to get ideas and learn about some of the mods and options. I'd do a compression test and Blackstone oil analysis. That will give you a pretty good indication as to what your engine's health is looking like. If all is good, wrench away.

Bolt-on mods don't care how many miles are on the car. Your hesitancy is in flushing money into a car that you will never, ever get back because resale value is mostly tied to age and mileage. If it makes you happy, go for it. But if you plan on selling the car in a year or two, then just keep it running and focus your hobby energy elsewhere. |
Welcome to the site, having a 2012 is a plus since you don't have that oil gasket to worry about. Ditto what Rochester said, and Hashim regarding skipping the springs on those higher mileage shocks that you're running.
Enjoy the G regardless, and if you build it up a bit, nothing wrong w/ that if you're not putting mortgage payments in jeopardy :) |
