So, you want to buy a 2008 to 2014 G35/G37/Q40/Q60
The V36 chassis is pretty solid, but like all cars, it has a few week points.
Less common issues are
The only other common complaint is that the automatic transmission is not a willing partner if you want to drive in a sporty manner. If you just want to sleep from point A to point B, it works well. If you want ready down-shifts, buy a Sport model with paddle shifters and use manual-mode. Convertibles have their own sets of top issues. You'll have peruse the convertible forum for their peccadillos.

Well done sir, and a nice easy link to refer to when asked which year(s) are best. Thanks!

Buying a 2008 G37S coupe 6MT. HELP!!!!
Hi, all. I’m about to take the plunge and get a G37s 6MT coupe, and I’d appreciate a little input. Here’s the details... Buying from Carmax so it has a 7 day, no questions asked return policy. Buying from Carmax means I’m overpaying by a few thousand dollars (it’s $19K. I know, ugh). I intend to get a PPI at my local Infiniti and will specifically ask for an oil pressure test at idle (and various rpm). Having read this thread I’m aware of the dreaded gallery gasket and will mention to Infiniti they look for any and all signs (including codes) of the gasket failure. The car in question is a 2008 with only 38K miles and one owner (personal use) with miles, etc verified by Car Fax. I’ll thoroughly inspect the car visually tomorrow, looking underneath for signs of any repaired accident damage that wasn’t reported. Important to note that this car has clear plastic protectant applied to the front end and mirrors (looks like it was installed when the car was new) implying that the owner was fanatical about his car (aren’t we all?). The black leather seats barely show any signs of wear and the interior shows few scratches, rubs or other signs of wear. No door dings (only minor scratches and a couple of tiny paint rubs/blemishes on the spoiler/sidesbumpers of the car. The wheels have zero curb rash. I’ve already driven it and everything worked as it should. There were no odd sounds or undue vibrations or rattles. Even the floor mats look little used. I’ve been looking for a long time for one with low miles in this condition but they rarely come available in Maryland and I’m unwilling to buy one sight unseen and have it shipped, or fly to California or Florida just for a test drive. I called the local Infiniti which looked up the car and found the previous owner only brought the car to an Infiniti once (several lesser services done), so no way to know what/where routine maintenance was done on this car. The signs all look good, but without the maintenance records I’m nervous. Any thoughts, ideas or opinions? |
With that mileage no maintenance aside from tires and oil is needed.

Thanks for the reply. I hope you’re right because I’m inclined to seal the deal tomorrow. Is the implication that if the gallery gasket/s were to fail it would have happened already or does it usually occur with cars having higher miles? Btw, the tires on the car are summer tires and they have 90% of their tread left. I suppose I’ll likely buy a set of all-season tires/wheels for the winter months. |
Can Slarti's post be stickied? I know he is usually the one to answer first timer questions about most of this information. This way, it can be stickied for those that take the time to read **IMPORTANT** stickied posts and will also be a linkable post for those that just are too lazy to read the stickies.
Great job Slarti!!! *edit- maybe this was made sticky already and I missed it. |
Yep, it's stickied.

Question on the internal oil gasket...
Just purchased an apparently well-maintained 2010 G37X with 74,000 miles. Most powerful car I've ever owned.
Noticed the internal oil gasket remark in the opening post. How would one know if this goes? Is there anything that helps precipitate the failure. |
Search for "internal oil gallery gasket in the Tech/Engine, Drivetrain, Forced Induction forum.

2011 G iPl
I have 58K with no mods & never had any of those problems. I got it from the 1st owner at 29K 5 years ago. Love the car & still get compliments!

So I have a 2011 G37 Coupe with 20k miles from FL. I've experienced the flooding in the foot wells from the seals being dried up from the Florida heat I'm assuming. Cleared, replaced the grommets & put an extension to go past the firewall so I don't experience the issue again hopefully. But this galley gasket I keep hearing people talk about is interesting to me.. I'd like to hear how I can help prevent this from happening or is it just non-preventable aside from regular maintenance to the car?

From what I'm hearing, it's a potential issue, not a definite thing. Apart from replacing the gasket, there is no preventative action. Chances are it won't happen.

As far as the gallery gasket goes, you can just check the oil pressure to see if there are signs of it beginning to fail. If you catch it before it gets bad no harm will be done other than the money to replace it with the revised part.
Oil pressure should be higher than 14psi at idle and higher than 44 psi at 2k rpm (the engine temp should be around 176 degrees Fahrenheit when doing the test). My oil gallery gasket was losing pressure at 55k miles on a 2010 G. Despite many people around me telling me its impossible at that low mileage and not to worry about it, i checked it anyhow because i felt the car hesitating on low rpm at odd times and was suspicious of the gallery gasket while troubleshooting everything else with no luck. Im glad i checked, The car is perfect now after replacing the part. |
