Are G37's really that bad?

I've wanted a G37 for a while now. Originally I wanted a G35 but found a Acura TL-S with more features and a better price. So now I am looking for a G37 and come to this site to see how they are. It seems most people on here are not happy with them and don't think they are very good. I see lots of complaints:

Paint being cheap
Not enough power
Engine is too loud
Slow and Heavy
Nav is not good
Suspension is too soft

I also see a lot for sale which makes me wonder.

So lets hear how you like yours. :BOOBIES:

First off, the members of this forum are not a statistically sound population. People often come here because their car is having problems. It's not like we sit around pow wowing about how much we love our cars.

I happen to love my car. It's comfortable, sounds good, reliable, fast, easy to mod, and classy. There are other cars that are better in any one or two of those categories, but not that many that fill those criteria quite like my G37. I understand where you're coming from though.

Hated the paint on the G35, we will see on ther new 37. Anyways... my first thoughts are-

You are between a TL-s and a G37? Is it safe to say you are at least comparing the TL against the sedan G37? I sure hope so...anyways

Power? The g37 beats the TL.
Slow and heavy? Heavy... yes. Slow? That's relative...not compared to the TL.
Nav I have heard is no good, but you can upgrade to newer maps. I wouldn't know.

My parents have a 2011 Acura TL SH-awd and I love that car. I would choose it over my infiniti almost any day. However... it is outside of my price range, which is why you are not looking at anything close to a 2011.

Edit- Also, TL-s is FWD... Handling is completely different. Depends on where you drive. Get lots of snow and only have the one car? Get the TL. My G is parked until at least march if not later.

TL-S = FWD

Not sure I'd compare one to a G.

There are alot of perfectionists and pseudo fanatics on the board; Obsessing over minute details and comparing the G to cars costing far more. Objective resources in the industry tend to rank the G near the top with regards to quality and performance value.

I am on my second one.

KEG97 Dec 22, 2013 03:41 AM

Love my G- I didn't even look at the TL b/c of the exterior and my so-so experience with my TSX. Personally, I think the G beats the TL on most everything except the nav system. Acura's navs are excellent.

Forums are typically places where people problem solve. The issues you cite are minor and many of them will be personal and easily determined during a test drive.

Like socketZ said, look at the G 37 ranking in its class, last year it was consumer reports 3rd highest ranking out of all cars and get the Sedan sport 6mt and the Acura will become a distant memory.

G37jeff Dec 22, 2013 07:28 AM

The G is the best of both worlds. I have had corvettes, z's, S2000, and a Cayman S. Not able to have a toy anymore with college approaching for my kids, I looked for something functional that is sporty. For me the G is perfect. 330 HP is enough to beat most cars, the handling is fine, and the exhaust note is awesome. I domt think you can go wrong. I purchased a 2010 G37X coupe with 33k miles for $25k great value.

I looked @ a whole range of sedans before settling in on the G. I test drove five different makes before coming to the conclusion that this was the right choice for me. The Nav is a little tricky to get the hang of but IMO this car stood out in the crowd. Before I bought my G I also did some consumer review / report research and found the G to be pretty much leading the pack in its class. To the point it's a fun car, easy to mod, has enough power, and the electronics are not hard to learn. Before doing ANY mods on this car I came to this site and read all the complaints and prays posts. It's a good choice....

I was in love with the TL-S and it was my number 1 choice to buy when I finished grad school last year. For good measure I also test drove several BMW 335 ix's as well. Was about to pull the trigger on a very nice TL until I saw the G37x coupe parked next to it and decided to take it for a drive.

Getting back into the TL felt like getting back into my trusty old Accord. Sliding into the G37 and hitting the accelerator felt like being in an F-18.

Not unhappy that I changed my mind and went for the G.

Paint being cheap
I wouldn't call the paint cheap by any means. There are a lot of regulations that affect paint quality. Paint now seems to be more watered down (and I'm using the term watered down very loosely since I know its not watered down) than it use to be. Infiniti could have countered the "watered down" paint by adding more coats and a thicker clear coat. That costs money though... Just don't tailgate other vehicles and you'll be fine.

Not enough power
I wouldn't say there isn't enough power. I would say there isn't enough torque. But it one of the few naturally aspirated engines in its class, most are relying in turbos. I prefer NA over turbos, less to go wrong, and it sounds great.

Engine is too loud
I have to disagree (if you're talking about the sedan) because I feel it should be louder. The VQ has such a great note. I am jealous of the FX and the G coupes because their exhaust note just purrs. I've been looking into getting an upgraded exhaust just to make it louder.

Slow and Heavy
Its not slow by any means, but you're not going to beat a 5.0 Mustang in a drag race (I've tried).

Nav is not good
Are you comparing the nav to the Google maps nav out of the Audi or BMW (if they have it)? Its not a bad set up, its just dated. The thing about having nav in a car is that its very difficult to always have whatever the latest is (I'm not talking about map updates), technology is always changing so whatever is "in" and current now won't be in two years (if that). If you plan on relying on using nav all the time then just use your phone.

Suspension is soft
I am assuming that you are talking about the Journey models, and I agree, but thats because I prefer the sport models (just an fyi, the awd sport model for the sedan is just an appearance package). A lot of people on here have upgraded their springs to Eibach or Swift which gives a little more of a sporty ride, and then there are some people that have spend over a grand on coil overs. It really just depends on what you would like to do with your car. Are you wanting to keep it stock, modify it, possibly track it?

You are probably seeing a lot for sale because a good majority of people that own a G probably lease them and their leases are up. Plus with the Q50 out people are wanting to upgrade to the latest model. Same thing happens with BMW, Audi, Mercedes. Whenever a new model comes out people start ditching the previous model for the newest one.

The G is a great car especially for value and reliability. I really think you need to test drive a Journey and a Sport before making your decisions.

The note of the VQ37HR reminds me of a small block chevy (similar displacement).

Not sure the car would appeal to me in the same way if it were whisper quiet. The aggressive and somewhat unrefined sound of the engine/exhaust is sorta what defines the character of the G.

From the other thread, the G is the girl who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and put herself through school working two jobs. Whisper quiet is for the Bavarian makes, or Ivy Leaguers :-)

People will complain about their cars on every forum you visit, so don't take mentions of the items you named as irrefutable proof that this car is garbage. It simply isn't.

The only thing I honestly don't like about my G37 is the fuel efficiency at times. That said, I knew full well going in that the fuel efficiency was not great, so I would hardly call it a surprise. My car is fast, reliable, sexy to look at, fun to drive, and overall- great. I have an S or sport model, so my suspension is plenty tight and my brakes have plenty of bite.

Exhaust too loud? I don't think I've read that in these parts. I miss the exhaust note of my G35 coupe and would rank that as the only area in which the previous gen beats this generation.

Oh- and I guess according to price, the cars are comparable, but I really wouldn't cross shop a G and a TL based on the fact that they are fundamentally different. (RWD vs FWD). That will give them characteristically different driving dynamics.

I have moved on from a G (2011 IPL) so here are my impressions:

Paint definately leaves something to be desired, but it didn't stop me from owning a G and a Z.

My G had plenty of power. No it wasn't a super car but it was faster than 75% of the cars on the road and had more than enough power to get me into trouble, or out depending.

I had an IPL and the engine sounded so sexy............I never drove through a parking structure or tunnel with out my windows down. I loved the sound.

For a heavy car it sure was nimble and handled amazing. I felt more confident in it then any other non sports car I had owned up to that point. By that I mean 2 seaters.

The Navigation was not the greatest and the voice took way too many commandes to use. That being said it found coffee shops and other things for me rather well but it's technology was behind. I never did use my phone in it even though my phone worked better.

Get a Sport Coupe, or step it up a notch and get an IPL, you won't think the suspension is soft at all.

Like was stated there are a lot for sale as they were leasing out G's for cheap, those leases are up and you can get great deals on a very well balanced car.

Now the biggest question......................would I buy another G37? You bet! Q50 no but G37 yes.

Jack10525 Jan 17, 2014 01:05 PM

Thanks for the insight guys. I HAD an 07 Acura TL-S. It's gone. I am considering a G37 Coupe. My Budget is around 25k. Can't really find what I want in that budget though. What I meant by loud is the motor. Not the exhaust. Still on the fence.
