I CAN'T do power shift!
I am a noob with stick shift.....last night I tried to run with the WRX and got whooped from 2nd gear......we were side by side at the end of 2nd gear but then from 2nd to 3rd he got like 2 cars in front of me   ......some help please.....when do you start to shift? 6.9rmp??? how do you work with the clutch? thankssssss

Launch.
Keep foot down. Put slight pressure on gear shifter in the direction that you want it to go. When car hits desired rpm, press clutch, move shifter, release clutch. Your foot is NEVER off the gas. The faster you can shift, the higher you can let the engine rev b4 shifting. |

I recall reading somewhere that you should back a off of the gas some (not all the way), cant recall the source though.
You should also get familar with the point where the clutch disengages; It's probably not at the floor. This is also adjustable. The less your clutch foot has to move, the faster it your shifts can be. |
dude arent u the guy who pulled of 13.7 at the track?

ok ok before the NGC 6mt's all end up in the shop, lets restate the above comment. DON"T TRY THIS until you have praticed many many times!
Start by learning on the freeway, driving @ 60mph then no lift shift to 5th. As you start to learn the patterns, raise the limit and the speed at which you and the engine are going. When you get REALLY good you rev all the way up to say 6500 rpm's then no lift shift and you will pop clutch before you bounce the limiter. EXTREME caution when doing this though. You will not ony prematurally wear the clutch, but you also run the chance of detonating your purty car. |
haha..well that explains why i cant go fast..I always let off the gas while shifting...

wikipedia on powershifting:
This is an advanced technique that gives a speed boost to the car when upshifting. This should only be used in racing applications, as it is very hard on drivetrain components, especially if done improperly. Even done properly, it generally puts undue stress on the drivetrain, and shortens the lifespan of the driveline components. To perform a power shift, keep the gas pedal on the floor (instead of lifting) while pushing in the clutch. At the same time, quickly shift to the next gear. Quickly re-engage ("pop") the clutch as soon as the new gear is selected. If done properly, the car will receive a "bump" in acceleration (due to the jerk of the decelerating engine) as the clutch is re-engaged. If done improperly, it can result in engine or transmission damage, sometimes catastrophic. |
I'm so glad I bought my 6mt new... remind me not to refer anyone to you guys when you're selling your cars in a couple yrs... ha

I pitty the foo that doesnt lift off the gas while shiftin heh.
|
I don't think my clutch will last 10k miles..........look like I need lots of time to practice slaming the clutch and never let the gas paddle off :).....BTW, the WRX that i raced was fully modified and boost up 18-20psi......I got him while runing at 3rd and 4th gear......but not from the 2nd gear.....THANKS all for your reply...........Devon, where do you set your shift light indicator? I set it at 7.2k hehe

I am sorry Devon but what's lift shift?

have you lost it man? dont keep your foot on the gas pedal while shifting. if you are that much of a newb to this, you dont want to practice on this car. The clutch wont be the only thing you replace.
