Code p0420 help
CEL light on, code p0420 means catalytic converter. Hoping it might be something else any thoughts? Btw 2013 g37x sedan 85,000 miles

P0420 means the cat isn't doing it's job.

Anyone know where to find new cats? And how much it might cost? Sorry don’t know much about this stuff. Also not opposed to an upgrade |
before running out and getting a set of new cats, the code is only for the passenger side and it could also just be an exhaust leak or an 02 sensor gone bad..if you change an O2 Sensor its a good idea to change them in pairs (i..e change the matching o non the other side as well)
if you do need new cats the best place to get them is in the classified on here form other members or your local craigslist anyways good luck and post up how you solved your problem! |

Good to hear that the CEL is gone hopefully it stays that way....keep in mind if the sensor is bad or there's a leak the car will adjust the A/f ratio to compensate on that bank...it can cause the rough idle and bad mileage too

I tried check for any air leakes but found nothing even did a smoke test. Do you think I should just change the 02 sensors? |
If it were me I'd plan to change the 02 sensors just to be safe but I'd also take a quick look at the spark plugs too as the plugs may have been running hot for a while due to the bad sensor and may be bad at this point too ...changing the plugs if they are bad may even immediately fix the idle and mileage issues even without changing the O2 sensor but it might be temporary if the sensor is not changed too and it may prematurely ruin another set of plugs

last thing you check is the catylitic itself since the car is not 30 years old.. when i had this code a lot of comments and websites kept confusing me and making it a big deal.. it was just sensor. When you have an electrical code first thing you consider is SENSOR.
