Exhaust Manifold Leak?

Hi everyone,
First off I wanted to say that I am a newbie to the forum (as of today) and I wanted to say hello and look forward to getting some insight about our G37. Having said that, I have a 2010 G37x sedan with no modifications (with the exception of 5% window tint). I wanted to get your advice on an exhaust question. I've noticed that in the last 6 months, the car has gotten louder when accelerating hard off the line or down shifting on the highway. When I asked the dealership to look at it during an oil change appointment, they said that it could be the exhaust manifolds, but they could not pinpoint it exactly. It was as if they told me in the form of a question, and then the kicker (which is not surprising to all of you), the cost to repair one bank was something like $1,500 to $1,800. There is no typical sound of an exhaust leak during idle, and no visible other failures that I could see. What I wanted to know is if anyone has had this issue before and if it was in fact the exhaust manifold? If not, what was the issue on your car? I plan on working on it myself at some point, but I didn't want to just throw parts at it and hope it works. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

The dealer will just throw parts at it. You need to get the car in the air, get under it and search for the leak. Start at the muffler and work forward.

Thanks Slartibartfast for the reply. Yeah I figured they would just throw parts at it, especially since they will start with the most expensive one. My plan was to do as you mentioned and eventually get under it and check, but what's throwing me off is that it is not so obvious at idle. I figured I would ask all of you to see if there was a spot to focus on or if there was one that was prone to this type of failure. Who knows, maybe I'll ditch stock exhaust for a setup that sounds better like in the exhaust thread

The quick way to find a leak is to get a helper and have them cover the outlets with rags then start the car and start listening to all the joints, etc.

Stick shop vac in one muffler outlet and have a helper hold a rag in the other. Spray each joint with soapy water (be sure to soak it up). Have helper hit the vacuum and you watch for bubbles to blow.

Rinse and repeat for each of the other joints.

This is a great idea! I have used compressed air and made homemade plugs/adapters for tailpipes then spray away with soapy water. Great way to find tiny exhaust leaks

Thanks! That’s a great idea to try! Seems like a great way to search for it.

Credit to ChrisFix on Youtube. I was looking at smoke machines and everything until I saw how he found the leaks in his exhaust system. Super cheap and provides a great visual.

I don't understand how this can work. Pulling air from the muffler puts a partial vacuum on the pipes so that any bubbles created will be on THE INSIDE of the pipe. Unless you're putting the vacuum EXHAUST into the muffler...

Use a vacuum shop and reverse the ports so that it blows. Sorry, should've specified that.

Hi Everyone. Sorry it has been a while since I've been on here but I wanted to let you guys know that the vacuum trick worked like a charm. I rigged the hose to stay in one exhaust tip and then blocked off other exhaust tip to create a closed system, and then crawled underneath and started spraying all the joints with soap water while the vacuum was running. Lo and behold, I found the exhaust leak to be coming from the right bank exhaust manifold to catalytic converter. It bubbled up like crazy. Now I just need to either get the parts to do the fix or suck it up and get it done at an exhaust shop. Thanks again guys for the suggestions.
