Catalytic converter rattle, covered?
2013 G37x, 7AT. Just recently I noticed what very much sounds like the infamous catalytic converter rattle. It only happens at idle to about 1,500rpm, doesn't matter if car is in Park or in Drive, etc. It isn't coming from the engine bay, seems to be right under the driver's seat or passenger's seat. I have a CPO warranty. Is this type of thing covered? I also understand that there is some kind of federal warranty for 8 years and 80k miles? I definitely didn't expect this to happen with 50k miles on the car. Any input is appreciated.

The Federal warranty covers the operation of the catalytic converter. The heat shield has nothing to do with clean air. As for CPO, check your contract or contact your dealer. |

While there have been instances of the substrate cracking in the converter, Occams Razor points towards the heatshield. It seems to be a rather common issue. |

Update: Went to dealership this afternoon. Driver's side catalytic converter is bad. They knew within about 5 minutes. The replacement will be totally covered by the emissions warranty. They gave me no hard time at all about needing a CEL or code in the computer. I'm a happy camper!

Good for you. I can breathe easier now that your exhaust is cleaner (bad pun most definitely intended). |
