I have about 50k miles and dealer is replacing my driver side catalytic converter under the 80k emission warranty. They said the o2 sensor may also need replacement (226a0 et000) at dealer part cost to me of about $230, they would check it for corossion when doing the cat replacement and replace if needed.

So my question is does that sound accurate? And if so, should i just tell them to replace the o2 sesnor regardless, so i dont end up paying for the labor to replace it later on? Car is 7 years old.

If the cat is being replaced under warranty and the O2 sensor needs replacement as well, the warranty should cover that too. O2 sensor is an emission system part. If their contention is that the sensor is good but can't be safely removed and replaced without damage when replacing the cat, that's their problem not yours. It should be done on their time and shouldn't cost you.

I checked the warranty info and the o2 sensor is not under the same 8/80 (federal extended emissions) warranty the cat is, o2 sensors are out of warranty.

Right now they have just ordered the parts. They ordered the sensor on spec that it may need replacing, because they said they wont know until they start the repair and look at it. So they have not looked at or worked on it at all right now.

The $230 they are quoting for the sensor is the price of the part only. They are not quoting me any labor, im assuming since labor is being covered by the cat warranty install.

If it's not covered by warranty and they're not charging you labor then it might not be a bad idea to replace anyway while they're doing the work it if the cost isn't a problem for you. It would be a shame to have to turn around later and pay for part and labor to replace it.

I have an 08 coupe and replaced both cats (went aftermarket). My mechanic advised that I should replace both O2 sensors as well. I purchased 2 sensors online for a little over 100 bucks for the pair (~70$ each--cant remember). Anyway, in terms of labor, replacing an O2 sensor is just unscrewing one end and unplugging the other. Obviously it's even easier if you're just plugging a new O2 sensor on a new cat. Not much extra labor involved. Thats just my 2 cents.

Would you be able to dig that information up; as in where you picked them up from? Have you had any issues with them being after market? Might need to do this soon since my car is throwing O2 codes for some reason at 37k miles. When I had to replace my Mazda's they ran about $400+ for front and $275 for rear if I recall so that price seems like a dream come true if I have to replace them for some reason.

Got em from amazon. To clarify, these are the O2 sensors connected to my new cats ( downstream sensors?), and yeah pretty much 70 bucks each. Ive seen cheaper and iVe seen more expensive- i kinda went midrange and i believe these are oem. No issues so far. Im running fast intentions rhfc if that matters.

I think rock auto has more options for both upstream and downstream sensors.

Dealers get away with murder, I don't know why anyone would go to a dealer for anything unless it was under warranty. Oh, better resale you might say, wrong. The $1-2k more your car might be worth down the road doesn't even get close to the difference you've paid the dealer compared to paying an import specialist shop, let alone the funds you would save doing things yourself. Complete nonsense.

But anyway, installing an o2 is very easy. One end literally plugs in and the other end screws into place. If you can plug in a lamp and take the cap off of a 2 liter, you can install an o2 sensor.

Yep, installation is simple, it's the removal that can be a bit tough, in fact I had to go full hillbilly to remove mine~

Be SURE to use copper anti-seize when installing your new ones, won't have to resort to those wrench tactics after doing that

That thing seizes up from the heat there is no way it's coming off; despite how many Pepsi's you've opened. I agree that it's simple in theory but in my experience the O2 sensors aren't exactly the most cooperative. I bypass the dealer at every opportunity but unfortunately, back in 08-09, the available resources to me at the time were limited. There was no after market O2 sensor that was compliant with the band Mazda used. So, if you jacked up your sensor you were going to feel the pain; and as a college student I felt it twice.

Swing and a miss. Code re-appeared after switching MAF sensors. Car still runs normal. Checked all my connections and everything is tight. Guess I'll try to clean the throttle bodies when I have a chance. What are the chances the O2 sensors are just shot? Don't really think the CAI would trip anything.
